Taliban Demands Pope Stop Conversions of Afghans

By Anne Thomas|Christian Today Reporter

The Taliban has warned Pope Benedict XVI that he will feel "the consequences of a severe reaction" if Christianity is allowed to be preached in Afghanistan.

    A Muslim woman walks by a poster of Pope Benedict XVI in Nazareth, northern Israel, Thursday, May 7, 2009. Pope Benedict XVI will visit Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories during his eight-day Holy Land tour that begins Friday, May 8. It's only the second official papal visit to the Jewish state and comes nine years after a groundbreaking trip by Pope John Paul II.

He was also asked to stop any attempts by "crusaders" to convert Muslims to Christianity.

The warning was made as Pope Benedict began an eight-day tour of the Middle East on Friday. This is his first papal tour of the Holy Land.

According to the ANSA news service, the Taliban issued a statement on an Islamic website following video footage by Al Jazeera showing U.S. soldiers with Bibles translated into the local Afghan languages.

The statement, on the website Alemarah1.org, said, "The Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan asks Pope Benedict XVI to act to stop the foolish and irresponsible actions of the crusaders upsetting the feelings of Muslim rebels, without awaiting the consequences of a severe reaction."

"The Taleban forcefully exhort the mujaheddin [jihadis], scholars and all religious circles to control the activities of the invaders and crusaders, and not allow anyone to preach religions except Islam," the message continued.

Afghan Muslims have been urged by the Taliban to resist conversion to another religion.

The U.S. Army said the Bibles were never distributed and were confiscated and destroyed. Army officials also confirmed that proselytism by active troops was forbidden.

Amid the controversy, Pope Benedict is making his first trip to an Arab country hoping to improve relations with the Muslim world.

His first stop is in Jordan where he will meet King Abdullah before heading to Israel.

Islamic extremists in Jordan have condemned the Pope’s visit to the country, criticizing the Pope for not apologizing for offending Muslims in 2006 when he quoted a Byzantine emperor who said, "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

Following the Pope’s comments in 2006, the Vatican released a statement in which the Pope expressed his regret at having caused offense to Muslims and reiterated that his intention was merely to speak against all forms of religiously motivated violence.

Despite this, Zaki Bani Rusheid, head of the Islamic Action Front, one of Jordan’s biggest political parties, was quoted by Reuters as saying, "The present Vatican pope is the one who issued severe insults to Islam and did not offer any apology to the Muslims."

    I say if the Taliban is worried about the conversion of Afghans because Benedict 16th is preaching there, I say it's high time we just got him on a preaching tour over there. Cover all the countries that hate Christianity and let them see the difference between Christian love and Islamic hate.

    farout63: I believe the Taliban and this message is just the start of the World View that most of the world is headed to. Christ has always been the core issue with everyone born from the time of Adam.

    I agree! Its OK and quite generic to say "God", but saying "Jesus" is altogether different. It brings the question of acceptance or not, as opposed to "someone who is just there and loves everyone".

    Strange that the heathen recognize who speaks for Christ as they always attack the Pope. That's because they know history - the Popes (from Peter on)have been given the mission "to go forth and teach all nations." Taliban threats are typical of "evil vs good" and as Peter showed "he was unworthy to die as His Master did and asked to be crucified "upside down." The differecne between Peter and Judas (both flawed men like ourselves) is the Peter had perfect sorrow for his sins while Judas sin of pride led him to despair. Had he asked Jesus for forgiveness Jesus would have given it to him. Go Vicar.

    Gives vent to the lied to close Guantanamo that the Koran was flushed down the toilet there. They should stick their head in their toilet and tell me how that hole is big enough to flush anything but a doo-doo down it. But of course our liberal press went with this lie for months and months. Go Vicar

    This guy here is so amusing: Jehovahnissi » Perhaps a lobotomy would help. He has a machine gun and all he does is pump out Bible verses. He must believe we don't have Bibles. It's what Sola Scriptura brings you - nothing. We wrote the Bible.

    I wonder if the reason why the Taliban is so veheminantly against Christianity is because, deep in their hearts, they know Christianity is the Truth.

    Fighting hate with hate is useless.

    Christians must love, in spite of the hate, & pray for the hearts of the Taliban to soften.

    "Ignore the thumbs down."

    I pretty much know the 4 people who give me a thumbs down. I think I could post that "Gay was OK" and they'd still give me a thumbs down just because I posted it!!!

    At least I know when they've been logged on!

    "During the eight-year period of the occupation of Afghanistan by the invading crusaders, these shameless crusaders have spared no effort in spreading the false crusader ideology in this Muslim country."

    This is taken from "The Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan"

    An eight-year effort....the ears are still open in Afghanistan.....

    "If the Pope isn't involved and our Catholic church isn't involved (not that I ever believe for a second they would stop converting no matter what the threat) there are plenty of Protestant Churches to fill the void. Christ cannot be stopped by man. The entire Christian Church Catholic and Protestant cannot be stopped.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~```
    Amen! The Truth cannot be silenced. 2,000 years ago they tried to silence the Truth by nailing it to a cross. That didn't work. So, after that, they tried to silence it by killing the followers of the Truth. All that did was compel it to spread globally.
    LOL. It just can't be stopped!
    Though I don't agree with much of Catholicism, I am with the Pope on this one.
    My reaction to the Tally ban?
    "We need to pray to God to have new inventions like
    electric cars"
    While I get your concept, I think reality may prove exactly opposite.. when there is no need for oil, do you think these people in the middle east are going to just laugh it all off and hug? Or do you think when economies get even harder, even more desperation (which is what drives this) will come into play. I tend to think if and when oil isn't needed, there will be far more violence, its just that no one will care (see Sudan, Somilia etc).
    Lastly, we don't need a miracle for energy independance, the US has more oil reserves than any other nation - we just don't want to tap it (we'd rather cover our landscapes with loud gian windmills, or ugly black massive solar panels)...
    Faithfull and practicing Catholic I am, I pray that never does our church halt the conversion of any and all to Christianity.
    It is funny that they ask the Pope to stop converting afghans to Christianity. They obviously don't understand that only God could sieze to convert people to Christ which is he. If the Pope isn't involved and our Catholic church isn't involved (not that I ever believe for a second they would stop converting no matter what the threat) there are plenty of Protestant Churches to fill the void. Christ cannot be stopped by man. The entire Christian Church Catholic and Protestant cannot be stopped.
    Pray for your brothers and sisters who are in harms way to bring the message of Christ to those in need so that they may be saved and not perish. Pray that we remember that according to the Gospel in too many places to mention (I will if anyone wants me too :)- )GOD IS WITH US so fear not and profess his name to all the nations. AMEN my brothers and sisters be strong in Christ as he is in YOU.
    We need to pray to God to have new inventions like
    electric cars, so that our dependency on foreign oil
    can be curtailed. The Taliban and other radical
    movements are being financed by the oil money, when their
    source of income is depleted, Taliban will be powerless
    paper tigers. Now, they are challenging the Pope, but
    they are challenging the whole Christianity; to stop
    evangelizing, which is the fundamental right and divine
    mandate of every Christian believer. Let us face the
    challenge through the power of the risen saviour JESUS
    CHRIST.
    Let us all Pray for Pope Benedict, that he will ignite the fire of the Holy Spirit so that all may come to the truth of JesusChrist being the Son of God, God and the Messiah of all people.
    Only through Christ can anyone be saved!
    "The U.S. Army said the Bibles were never distributed and were confiscated and destroyed."
    This is a very sad statement. Why destroy the Bibles?
    Imagine, if the Koran had been destroyed, what would the fallout have been?
    I believe the Taliban and this message is just the start of the World View that most of the world is headed to. Christ has always been the core issue with everyone born from the time of Adam. Will be obey the LORD or reject the LORD. God has bridged the gap with Jesus Christ. John 3:16 states it so simply. WE have life if we have Jesus and we have death if we do not.
    We know the Taliban does not have Life.
    The Islamists are lying about the Pope not apologizing, in order to stir up violence against Christians. Seems to be an awful lot of fear hiding behind these tough guy's religious certainties. If they really had courage they would allow freedom of conscience, and let the best doctrine win. But just as it has been from the beginning, the Islamists rely on fear and coercion to keep their people in line.
    It seems Muslims like Zaki Bani Rusheid are also hard of hearing. The Pope expressed his regrets over this ridiculously overblown matter of "insulting" Muslims. It's the Islamists who won't let the story die. Where is the forgiveness, if that's even needed here, that is expressed in the Koran? This is political mischief on the part of these opportunistic Islamic groups, not hurt religious feelings that need assuaging.
    It's ironic that the Taliban are doing exactly what they were accused of by that Byzantine emperor, using fear and violence in the name of God. I guess it hurts when your spade gets called a spade.
    The Taliban is seeing people leave Islam and follow Jesus at an "alarming" rate. The Taliban's hate just doesn't hold up against the love of Jesus.
