Major Campaign Urges Obama to Fix Immigration Problem

By Ethan Cole|Christian Post Reporter

An array of activists and community leaders launched a national campaign Wednesday to support President Obama before his slated meeting with Congressional leaders next week to push forward immigration reform legislation.

Leaders partaking in the Reform Immigration FOR America campaign represent labor unions, business coalitions, civil rights and religious groups, and pro-immigrant advocacy organizations.

“At the end of the day this is not a political issue but rather one of a moral and spiritual imperative,” said Rev. Sam Rodriguez, Jr., president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference.

“Every day that passes without comprehensive immigration reform tarnishes the soul of our nation as children are separated from their parents, immigrants hide deeper in the shadows and over 12 million people live in a land without the opportunity of ever experiencing the fullness of life, embracing the hope of liberty or pursuing the promise of happiness,” the evangelical leader said.

President Obama has said he plans to work on immigration reform this year. Speaking from Mexico City in April, Obama said he wants a common sense approach that would help people on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. He also wants a new system that would streamline the process for immigrants who want to come to the United States, and create a pathway for illegal immigrants already in the country to become legal residents.

The president is scheduled to meet with members of Congress on June 8 to discuss immigration reform.

“Our nation’s broken immigration system isn’t working for anybody – not immigrant workers who are routinely exploited by companies, and not U.S. born workers whose living standards are being undermined by the creation of a new ‘underclass,’” said Arlene Holt Baker, executive vice president of AFL-CIO. “As a part of broad-based economy recovery, we need a comprehensive solution – and soon.”

The press conference on Wednesday was part of a weeklong series of activities across the nation to demonstrate broad support for comprehensive immigration reform and a commitment to win the legislative battle expected later this year.

More than 40 events in 35 states are scheduled this week to support the campaign.

Nationally, more than 200 organizations have signed on to the campaign and a national summit of more than 700 advocates of the campaign is taking place Wednesday through Friday at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.

A town hall meeting with members of Congress, some of whom are expected to meet with the President next week – will take place Thursday morning.

“Families are the bedrock of our society, and a system that keeps hard-working, tax-paying, legally present immigrants apart from close family members for years and even decades is bad for America and calls for immediate repair,” said Karen K. Narasaki, president and executive director of the Asian American Justice Center.

“Across the country, momentum is building in the Asian American community for comprehensive immigration reform,” she said. “Addressing the family immigration backlog and bringing undocumented families out of the shadows are top issues for our community and we’re excited to join the Reform Immigration FOR America campaign to get common sense immigration reform passed this year.”

The campaign will be using new technologies such as a national text messaging system and various online organizing strategies to direct messages from constituents directly to members of Congress.

Blacksho: "God blesses those who welcome immigrants and the poor. I have done mission work in Mexico, and have seen the desperate poverty that our neighbors are fleeing. But much of the fault for that poverty lies directly in the hands of the corrupt, feudalistic Mexican government. Etc.

I agree with this post 100%. But there is much more danger here...terrorists entering the country with bombs, some nuclear...and as was revealed last week, entering the country with poisons like anthrax, etc. dumping them in our water supplies, so the end result is that a policy helps no one. My parents were immigrants and came in the lawful way. We need to return to that.

God blesses those who welcome immigrants and the poor. I have done mission work in Mexico, and have seen the desperate poverty that our neighbors are fleeing. But much of the fault for that poverty lies directly in the hands of the corrupt, feudalistic Mexican government.
Until radical reforms are made in Mexico, even a fully open border would not relieve the poverty, it would merely further concentrate the wealth in our two countries into the hands of some of the wealthiest people in the world.
Comprehensive reform MUST begin in the D.F, not D.C.

"The cost of illegal immigration has such a profound impact on my field of employment. As a teacher in the state of California, "

California brings it on themselves. Universal health care you voted on a couple of years ago, and already you are in the big gaping hole financially just like Obama is doing to the Federal Government and - he is about to add US Universal health care.

California also spent $330 million dollars on embryonic stem cells (killing babies) - this something which has never worked (adult stem cell does work and use of umbilical cords to heal people works also without killing human beings)

    Again--Cal spent $millions on "gay marriage" an oxymoron;

So, like the National voters "...you reap what you so."
Laugh and the world laughs with you; cry and you cry alone.

    I wouldn't give Cal a buck

It's the voters who are stupid US - wide.

You really have voted for a Terminator...

The cost of illegal immigration has such a profound impact on my field of employment. As a teacher in the state of California, we are seeing vast amounts of resources going to teaching of English as a second language. By resources I don't just mean money, but educational time. In the 6 hour day we current have 1 hour of that time has to be spent on developing English language skills while the rest of the class is given independent work. It should come as no surprise that this approach to education is having devastating effects on student progress. I for one am waiting for the first family to sue the state when they realize that a certain group of students received special treatment when their child needed the help just as bad, but they were not allowed to receive the help.

Before we change the immigration policy we need to figure out who pays for our existing weak to non-existent practices associated with illegal immigration. Who pays for the $9 billion (Diggers Realm) California taxpayers spend every year on providing services to illegal immigrants and housing illegal immigrant jail inmates. If immigration policies are liberalized this cost will increase. Don't people understand that these changes will cost taxpayers billions. The State of California is broke! If Mexico wants to promote illegal immigration let it shoulder at least $10,000,000,000.00 of the cost. I people in the North East want a liberalized policy have them send $1000 per person (including infants) to California, Arizona, Texas and other border states that are currently flipping the bill.

The only solution is for the corruption and unproductive practices in Mexico to come to an end. For the problem to be solved, every Mexican child under the age of 16 MUST be going to school. At least 1/4 of Mexican high school graduates MUST attend college. CORRUPTION MUST BE STOPPED.
