Black Pastor Urges Southern Baptists to Recognize Obama's 'Historic' Election

By Eric Young|Christian Post Reporter

A black Southern Baptist pastor is urging his denomination to acknowledge the significance of President Obama’s election and to join hands with the nation’s first black commander-in-chief.

When “messengers” of the Southern Baptist Convention gather this month for their annual convention, the Rev. Dwight McKissic, Sr., hopes they will pass the “Resolution on racial reconciliation and the election of Barack Hussein Obama” that he submitted for consideration.

The resolution, which recognizes the path taken so far by America and the Southern Baptist Convention toward racial justice, resolves that the denomination celebrate the “historic nature” of Obama’s election last November “as a significant contribution to the ongoing cause of racial reconciliation in the United States.”

“Be it further resolved, that we earnestly pray that President Barrack Hussein Obama will use the constitutional authority assigned to his office to promote liberty and justice for all people, including the unborn,” the resolution states, “and be it finally resolved, that we will join hands with President Obama and his administration to advance causes of racial justice insofar as those efforts are consistent with biblical principles of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

Though the Southern Baptist Convention, in addition to being the largest, is the most conservative Protestant denomination in America, McKissic is hoping that the autonomous church body will acknowledge Obama’s election as it has with other historic events, such as the Oklahoma City bombing and Israel’s 60th anniversary.

Such an acknowledgment, some say, would make for a fitting follow-up to the “Resolution on Racial Reconciliation” that was adopted by the denomination on its 150 anniversary.

In 1995, the SBC recognized how slavery played a role in the formation of the denomination in 1845 and how Southern Baptists failed, in many cases, to support, and in some cases opposed, legitimate initiatives to secure the civil rights of African-Americans.

“Racism has divided the body of Christ and Southern Baptists in particular, and separated us from our African-American brothers and sisters,” the denomination acknowledged.

Though the SBC, in its 1995 resolution, resolved to pursue racial reconciliation in all relationships – especially with brothers and sisters in Christ – some observers are skeptical about whether or not the denomination will approve of McKissic’s resolution given Obama’s pro-choice platform.

“[T]here are many reasons to celebrate Obama’s election, not the least of which being the potential for the furtherance of racial reconciliation,” commented Dr. Jason Epps, the founding/lead pastor of Gospel Fellowship Community Church in Salt Lake City, Utah.

“I sincerely hope you (McKissic) are correct [that there won’t be too much opposition to the resolution], but the cynical part of me wonders what the good ole boys might have to say about this,” he added.

Currently, the draft resolution that McKissic submitted is being reviewed by a Southern Baptist committee that will decide whether it should be put to a vote at the denomination's annual meeting June 23-24 in Louisville, Ky.

McKissic is the founding pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas, which is reportedly 4,500-large.

McKissic was formerly a member of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary’s board of trustees but resigned over a controversy regarding “private prayer language,” or the practice of speaking in tongues.

Sunday, my wife and I were watching the service in the audio duplication room on the monitor. The pastor asked "who in this room has personality traits that are annoying to someone else?" I looked at my wife and said "not me!" She cut her eyes at me and I said "I'm not in that room!"

    Tee, hee!

That correlation falls flat on it face, because a person is born black but no one is born homosexual.

So far so good. He lost his platoon sargant, platoon leader and 3 of his buddies in the bombing on Good Friday though.

As for Iraq...I've posted elsewhere and maybe here too but Iraq has been funding terrorism for over 40 years. The truth is there is no good way to fight terrorism. You're fighting against people with no honor who think killing themselves while blowing innocent people up is the way to get into heaven. The only way to fight people like that is to either kill them or have quite a few padded cells available.

Fighting terrorism is a dirty and filthy prospect but it has to be done. It has been put off for far too long and we are now reaping from that delay.

    Danpart,

Amen. When I was having the talk with my teenage son, I told him the same thing. If you're going "act like a man" and do something like that, then you're gonna "act like a man" and take full responsibility in raising the child. He has big aspirations for pro sports, and I told him he can kiss that goodbye if he did something dumb like that. I think that caused him to think twice before acting.

After 16 years, heartaches, injuries, time outs, groundings, an occasional spanking, plus numerous wonderful times, I love them as much as I did the day I first held them.
What blessing and joy mothers are throwing away. God, convict their hearts before they make that bad decision. Please."

This very nice. Then I just saw a study that the girls/women having abortions something like 60% of them would not have had them if the boy (father) would have stuck by them; so it's on the male also. I teach my son "if you play--you pay."

I think we all understand that PBS is publicly funded. When you use the term "state-run media" it implies all media being controlled by the government. You actually prove my point. How many times do you see trashy reality shows and naked women (with the exception perhaps of classic artworks) on PBS? Answer: never The fake Iraq evidence I was referring to is the fake yellow cake uranium memo that everyone knew was fake but which Bush referred to countless times in the build-up to the Iraq invasion. Sorry to disappoint you. My dad was Dean of a Bible college who taught Marriage and Family Life and Pastorial Counseling. I was once asked by a student at the college what my dad was really like. I asked him to elaborate. He asked "what's he like at home when no one's watching?" The truth is what you saw was what you got!

As for me, I hate sin. I have seen sin do very destructive things to people. Those who love sin cannot see the difference between hate of sin and hate of sinner. When I came back from the Philippines we flew into NYC. The buildings from the air were all the same height. It was a sea of roof tops. From the ground there was quite a difference! The problem sinners have is they measure from the ground. God measures from the air. I'm just as bad as the next sinner. That's why I needed to die to self and live the life of Jesus who HATED SIN.

You can only embrace one thing well in this life. It's either Jesus or sin. Take your pick. If I hated you ... why would I spend time praying for you? Why would I even care? You really are not use to people loving you on Jesus' terms are you?
