Pro-Life Blogger Apologizes for Pregnancy Hoax

By Eric Young|Christian Post Reporter

A blogger whose pro-life story tugged on the heartstrings of thousands online has formally apologized for deceiving all who had prayed for and supported her throughout the last few months of what was recently revealed to be a fictitious pregnancy.

“I know this post will not change what has been done,” Beccah Beushausen, 26, wrote on her blog Sunday. “I don't expect it to, but I do hope it helps with some of the hurt that I have caused.”

For months, Beushausen – who identified herself only as “B” or “April’s mom” – wrote about her unborn baby, April Rose, who she said was diagnosed as terminally ill in the womb.

Her posts were long. They were detailed. They were also fabricated.

But the last part didn't stop Beushausen from continuing even as she drew more and more readers and supporters.

“Almost overnight I was receiving e-mails from people who at one point had been pregnant and unmarried, or had suffered loss, or were Christian but believed in the sanctity of life in all circumstances,” recalled Beushausen, who describes herself as a pro-life Christian.

And as her readership grew, she continued to “feed the story.”

But readers became suspicious after she claimed last Sunday night that she had given birth to her “miracle baby,” reporting in her blog that April Rose had survived a home birth only to die hours later. What tipped them off was the photo she posted of the baby, which a number of readers recognized to be that of a lifelike doll made by Salt Lake City-based Bountiful Baby.

Sensing that the jig was up and fearing that her identity would be uncovered, Beushausen scrambled to delete her Blogspot, Twitter, and Facebook accounts.

But it was too late by then. Her true identity was revealed and the web of lies she spun gradually became unraveled.

“I wrote many of my posts under dishonest contexts,” Beushausen admitted Sunday.

“I lied,” she continued. “Worse still, I lied to a community of people whose only intention was to support me through this time and that is wrong, and for that I am sorrier than you could know.”

Though some suspect that she spent months churning out lies for financial gain, Beushausen claims that she did not receive any checks or cash through her P.O. Box and that she had only received a “limited” number of non-monetary gifts – all of which she claims to have boxed up and given to a close friend to donate to a local agency.

Beushausen also clarified Sunday that while the online women’s network BlogHer offered to pay her in exchange for posting ads in her blog, she didn’t make it past the minimum 45 days, and therefore received no money.

But true as her latest claims may be, many of her former supporters say they are more upset over the time they had spent supporting her, praying for her, and ministering to her – all of which have only seemingly amounted to hurt and sorrow.

“The fact that we want to honor the Lord doesn't mean that we aren't experiencing anger, disappointment, and deep sorrow,” wrote three Christian women who had been following Beushausen’s blog and drawing readers to it through their network of mothers.

But in a similar way, the women acknowledged that being Christian doesn’t make a person infallible or immediately rid a person of their sinful nature.

“[T]his is not an excuse for her actions, but rather what we believe is truth,” wrote the three in their respective blogs last Thursday.

Though the women said they were “hurting” along with the rest of those who were drawn into Beushausen’s web of lies, they encouraged believers to have mercy on the 26-year-old social worker from Mokena, Ill., and to help her cope as she comes to understand what she has done.

“We sincerely believe that she is mentally ill, and are collectively relieved that she is in the care of psychiatrists who are working to bring her to a healthy place,” they wrote, urging readers to “show grace and love to someone who needs it desperately.”

In her apology Sunday, Beushausen made no reference to a mental illness nor showed clear signs of such an illness. She did, however, say she suffered from “very constant” pain from having experienced the loss of a baby and that she is and will be getting help with past unresolved issues.

The simplest and most honest answer Beushausen said she can give to explain why she started lying is that she is struggling with her life.

“I have been dealing with unresolved pain that weighs heavy on my heart and which I have been unable to handle alone,” she wrote, noting that she has more than once lost a baby – from as early as her college years to just this past year.

And although she is a Christian, Beushausen confessed that she is a “weak,” “messed up” and “struggling” one who has dealt with a lot of pain.

“I don't say that to garner your sympathy or to lessen your anger. I say it because it is true,” she stated.

In closing, Beushausen directed readers to a site that highlights nearly 100 real families of real T13 babies presently living with the disease or struggling with such a diagnosis that she claimed her fictitious unborn baby had.

In the meantime, Beushausen intends to lay low and pick up the pieces of her life, asking only for respect and forgiveness.

Flagged as inappropriate. show Well now we know that Cheisa believes in salvation by good works. Anybody else want to come forward as a heretic? hide

cheisa, your last post rocked, although I would say the example you used at the end, that person was never saved in the first place if like you said salvation to them was nothing more than a "Get Out Of Hell Free Card" and they were free to live their life any way they want!

Jesus didn't give anyone a free pass into heaven. You have to practice your faith and live a Christian life, imitating Christ, actively doing the work of God. Merely saying you're a Christian doesn't mean anything, if you don't practice it. You can lose salvation if you live as an unrepentant sinner, no matter how many times you say you accept Jesus Christ. You accept Him as your personal Savior, not your personal excuse.

Flagged as inappropriate. show Sure she lied, but what does she care? She's from a religious tradition that says that right and wrong don't matter, all that matters is faith in doctrine. Is it really that surprising that someone who thinks that Jesus gave her a free pass to heaven no matter what she does would go ahead and live it up a little? hide

To all who supported her with prayer: You did as God directed you. His ways are not ours; and you do not know why He had you pray. Do not be angry at this woman who is being used by Him.
Alockslee: Speaking for myself, this fundamentalist does not have a fascist agenda (by the way, do you even know what fascism is?).

Chiesa: "You know Alockslee, there was a time I'd have written off your post as stereotyping claptrap, but there's is quite a bit of truth to some of it. Sadly, I found out..."

Yep, Joe Biden who said we are "unpatriotic" if we don't pay taxes and is a millionaire and gave 0.03 to charity last year and even less the years before. As Huckabee (I like him a lot) said he and his wife gave their tithe and then some even when they couldn't afford it (early days of their marriage) It's easy for politicians to spend someone else's money. God Bless

We all live in glass houses, so lets not throw stones. May JESUS heal this lady and the stonethrowers too.

As a Pastor I've heard enough tear jerker lies to last for a lifetime, one church I served as the Minister of Youth at everybody who had a dying aunt in Orlando had car trouble at our exit on the Interstate, we live in a world where many people will do whatever it takes to get money or a free handout, but then we have many people who indeed need the help and are willing to do all they can to do the right thing, when I worked as a Counselor at a Rescue Mission in a large city we had a free food distribution for Thanksgiving and I remember there was one family and the parents were wearing Burger King uniforms and if there was a way I could have given them a double helping I would have because they were trying to do there best to provide for their children as well as themselves. And for me personally it's knowing that even though there are a lot of people who take advantage of caring and giving people, when God lets me see that we genuinely helped someone or a family it makes all the abuse worth it.

There are no winners here. Wrong was done in the name of the Lord. But God can work good out of it.

While I have seen plenty of cases where fundamentalist Christians have been more than a little naive in buying into stories, I don't think anyone can be blamed here. The people that responded to this woman likely did so out of concern and a desire to help. So, while I agree with what Alockslee and have seen situations much like what Cheisa described, I don't know if they are entirely applicable here.

What is for sure is that human beings, from the most pious to the atheist, are cabable of doing outlandish things to get attention. I don't think she needs help or pity; rather, I think she needs to be firmly set in her place by those who, out of the goodness of their hearts, wasted time and energy on someone who was doing nothing more than playing with their emotions for no particular reason. It's all quite pathetic really.

You know Alockslee, there was a time I'd have written off your post as stereotyping claptrap, but there's is quite a bit of truth to some of it. Sadly, I found out that my own relatives are dishonest, self-centered people disguised as Christians and they are absorbed with their church. But, it's a big front. Maybe the others members of their church are fooled, but they don't have to seal with them on any real level.Unfortunately, Christ's true message doesn't resonate with them. They are among the most uncaring, superficial people I know, atheists included. Yes, people who claim not to believe in God are actually more ethical than them. They've been brainwashed into thinking only they matter and they both treat their parents like garbage. It's sinful and evil what I've seen from these supposed believers and their cockamamie sect.

This person obviously is in need of help. And I think that's exactly what she sought when she started up with her lies and even received up until she was caught. Though her method wasn't right, I think her readers should continue to help her and support her. People make mistakes. She made a big one, but still ... you gotta feel sorry for her though.

al, get real, I'm sure many liberals bought her story as well and have found themselves with egg in their face when they have prematurely bought into what appeared to be a legitmate story.

This story illustrates the fact of how mindless and brainwashed fundies really are! They just jump in and don't investigate the situation!

The evangelical portion of society is so indoctrinated that it has lost the ability to think independently of their programming which has removed that ability.

This should be a wake up call to everyone in America that the control of the will of those involved in Fundamentalism is a serious problem and that it must be addressed to help these people recover their senses.

All it takes is for a pulpit puppet to speak and the knee jerk reactions happen! Their strings are too easily manipulated by a very few people in control of the masses of mind controlled members.

When are the rest of lemming going to wake up to this dangerous condition and correct it before they are called upon to do something even more extreme such as armed revolution or attacks on the public to carry out the fascist agenda at the very core of this baseless group of people unable to recognize what has happened to them and the need to correct the condition so they can become TRUE CHRISTIANS and not just puppets of a fascist dictatorship under the guise of religion.
