Hispanic Christians Applaud Obama's Vow on Immigration Reform

By Lillian Kwon|Christian Post Reporter

WASHINGTON – Eight years ago, Hispanics were just glad to be in America. Today, they're pushing for upward mobility and for the ears on Capitol Hill.

President Barack Obama shakes hands with Rev. Luis Cortes, Jr. before delivering remarks at the Esperanza National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast and Conference, Friday, June 19, 2009, in Washington.

"We are now making our voices heard," said the Rev. Luis Cortes, Jr., who heads Esperanza, the largest Hispanic evangelical network in the country. "Now we come and we feel indignant when political leaders don't address us or when they address us and don't understand our position."

Their efforts seem to be making headway as President Barack Obama said on Friday that he is committed to passing comprehensive immigration reform.

Addressing hundreds from the Latino community during the National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast, Obama committed to providing a way for millions of undocumented immigrants to become U.S. citizens while also strengthening border security.

He specifically noted that the "fair, practical and promising way forward" on the immigration issue is to require illegal immigrants to pay a penalty, pay taxes, learn English and "go to the back of the line behind those who played by the rules."

"The American people believe in immigration," he said. "But they also believe that we can't tolerate a situation where people come to the United States in violation of the law nor can we tolerate employers who exploit undocumented workers in order to drive down wages."

The crowd of Hispanic Christians welcomed Obama's vow with enthusiastic applause and eager snapshots to capture the moment.

Immigration reform has been the primary issue of concern for Hispanic Christians for years because of its devastating effect on families.

"Nothing has our families more divided than the immigration law of this country," Cortes told The Christian Post.

Cortes, who was named one of the 25 most influential evangelicals in America in 2005 by Time magazine, believes the faith community should lead the way on the immigration issue, calling it a moral issue and not an issue of law.

"It's an issue of God's love," he said, adding that Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist and other churches have all signed on to support immigration reform.

Some churches and church leaders, he acknowledged, do not support immigration reform. But he has one request for them – to use the term amnesty appropriately.

"Amnesty has been used in a negative way," Cortes lamented.

"Amnesty is what Jesus Christ gave us ... so we should understand that it is free of charge," he stressed. "Church people using it with an incorrect definition is sinning against God."

Obama, however, has it right, the Hispanic evangelical leader said.

According to Cortes, Obama plans to call a meeting with congressional leaders next week to place comprehensive immigration reform on the agenda.

Though Cortes hopes the reform will pass this year, White House officials have done little to build up that hope.

Earlier this year, Obama administration officials told CNN that the White House is not pushing to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill this year given the state of the economy and other pressing issues. And though the president had always planned to begin discussing the matter this year the job will not likely be done this year, according to White House press secretary Robert Gibbs.

Obama has also yet to lay out a timeline for overhauling immigration.

The U.S.-Mexico problem can't really be understood without knowing some history. In the 19th cent. the U.S. was run by naked white supremacists, whose dream was to take as much territory as possible from aborigines, usually by forcing them at gunpoint to "sell" it and promise to vacate, in order to carve out a whites-only homeland. Mexico became their prey in 1848, when they stole half its territory then left Mexicans with a sawed-off country eternally doomed to subsistence agriculture and border lawlessness. 160 years later, the pop. in Mexico is too big for the agricultural capacity, hence the U.S. now has an "illegal immigration" problem.

The U.S. started it, and can finish it, not by temp fixes such as granting amnesty to a part of the Mexican people who just want to live where they can support themselves, but by officially inviting all of the Mexican people to dissolve their ever-corrupt fatcat-controlled govt. dominated by those of Spanish descent, and join the U.S. as the "51st state". The only two losers in this would be white supremacy, and the Mexican govt. The U.S. would gain 760K sq. mi. of new territory, including 5.8K mi. of yummy coastline, which would no doubt attract millions of "gringos" or Yankees to move into and set up new cities, creating new jobs at all levels and boosting the GDP in a win-win paradigm. The new expanded borders would be easier to defend against world terrorism. Click http://go.to/megamerge to read my well thought-out proposal showing how the Obama admin. can do it in only 5 years.

An interesting statement. Jesus did not give us amnesty. He took our place and paid the price for our crime. Cortes is correct that those who use amnesty the way he is are sinning against God as they devalue the death of Christ on the cross just as he did with his statement.

It is amazing to hear that Latino "evangelicals" have signed onto Obama's "break the law, amend the law" sham on the American people. He then has the nerve to say to these people that we are a nation of laws. Obama is the new Bill Clinton, a moral relativist at best, and a classic deceiver at worst. Americans have filed lawsuits to obtain a legitemate copy of his hospital birth certificate, which "law abiding" Obama has stonewalled and hired his own team of lawyers to combat the issue. This is about votes, plain and simple. President Reagan granted amnesty for seven million, and they rewarded that act of compassion with twelve to twenty million more coming across the border to demand their "rights" as illegal aliens in a foreign land, something that their own Presidents Fox and Calderon deny to other people. Mexico is not a poor country contrary to popular belief, but they have no regard for their own people's needs and shovel them off to another country to send back revenue. Now, Obama's crew simply says we'll just enact immigration "reform" (code word amnesty while being reclassified as "undocumented workers"), making them pay taxes, and getting in the back of the line. What does that mean? They get immediate access to drivers licenses, government benefits, and all of the school and hospital care, while waiting for their citizenship. Now, with unemployment at 11%, how does the workplace accommodate eleven million new "workers" who are already here? By the way, did you also notice that the busy Chief Executive had no time for the National Day of Prayer and the annual prayer breakfast, but had plenty of time for the Latino version of the same? Wake up Christians, and see this act for what it really is, POLITICS.

Many Christians do support immigration reform.

The issue is what kind of reform?

Reform is useless unless the borders are reinforced & the rule of law respected.

Legal immigration rather than illegal immigration should be the main policy thrust. An orderly process of respecting the law rewards those who work within the system, rather than giving incentives for further law-breaking.

Evangelicals who assist in breaking immigration law are not submitting to the authority of civil government, one that is ordained by God.

Spiritual amnesty does not necessary translate into a requirement or necessity of immigration amnesty.

Otherwise, if brought to its logical conclusion, any and all individuals can come to the US at will. Such open doors immigration policy will destroy the US economy & place an enormous drain on the social services resources of our nation.
