Southern Baptists Re-Elect President Johnny Hunt to 2nd Term

By Aaron J. Leichman|Christian Post Reporter

Georgia pastor Johnny M. Hunt was re-elected as president of the Southern Baptist Convention on Tuesday, during the first day of the denomination’s annual gathering.

Hunt, a Native American who pastors the megachurch First Baptist Church of Woodstock, Ga., was elected to a second term without opposition and said only one thing at the press conference following his election.

“I guess the only statement is ‘Glad to see you,’” said Hunt.

Last year, Hunt received nearly 53 percent of the vote of over 5,000 SBC messengers – representatives of local SBC churches – during SBC’s annual meeting and was enthusiastically received at a time of decline.

In nominating Hunt for a second one-year term as president, Ken Whitten, pastor of Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz, Fla., said it was “real obvious” to him that "Dr. Johnny Hunt is God's sovereign choice to lead Southern Baptists for such a time as this."

"This past year, we have watched Dr. Hunt and we have seen a man with a mission on his mind and a burden on his heart," Whitten said, according to Baptist Press. "He has been like Moses: He knows the ways of God. He has been like David: A man who has a heart for God. He has been like Daniel: With courage from God. He has crisscrossed our nation to meet with young pastors and future leaders."

After years of being asked to lead the largest Protestant denomination in the country, Hunt sensed a calling to accept the nomination last year and ran against five other nominees.

He succeeded the Rev. Frank Page, who served two one-year terms.

(The problem is a President of a church is not found in the Bible)

Let's continue this same line of biblical perspective; a universal bishop and apostolic authority is also nowhere to be found in the Bible...

chas, Johnny Hunt has absolutely no power or authority whatsoever, Southern Baptists are firm believers in the autonomy of the local church, the SBC cannot force any of it's member churches to do anything. A good example is the church in Fort Worth that had fellowship withdrawn from it. The SBC had no authority to force it to change its practices but could only and did withdraw fellowship from that specific church. At the convention only resolutions are passed but no SBC church is forced to adhere to those resolutions since they aren't binding to the local church.

Isn't it interesting how even Baptists realize there is a need for a leader of their church. Someone who will make the final decision on; discipline, policies, doctrine, morals and administrative. Yes, others may influence the President of the SBC, but the reason why you have a President is so one person can bind and loose on behalf of the greater church body.

Even Baptists realize there has to be someone at the top who will say "Yes or No" to something, so a church can move forward.

The problem is a President of a church is not found in the Bible. The other problem is the electing of leadership comes from scripture which is where the Apostles elected Mathias and they "Laid Hands of Authority" on him so he would receive the Apostolic authority and power to legislate, discipline, set policy, doctrine, etc. We see clearly in the Bible this is how they elected people, another problem is that when you elect someone the people who elect him must have a God given authority to do so.

The people who elect President Hunt, did not have any Apostolic authority. We see clearly from scripture that you must follow this pattern and the only succession comes from the Catholic Church. Christ did set up a Visible Head of the Church and that was Peter and his successors based on the KEYS of the Kingdom of HEaven.

The Bishop of Rome, has the biblical and traditional mandate to act as Prime Minister(not president since that is a secular title)for the body of Christ. You see, just as we humans realize we need one person who is the final court of appeals and one person who can bind and loose on a particular subject, Christ knew this before us and that is why he established Peter to be a fellow bishop, priest but the singular head of the Apostles and bishops. Only Peter and His successors have the final say on behalf of Christ and His Church.

This position of President for the SBC is not only unbiblical it is contrary to scripture. Kind of interesting for Bible alone types.

It was a balmy California evening. I had gone for a jog before I was to speak at a leadership conference. I still can't recall how I got there, but I found myself sitting on a curb
