G8 Climate Change Progress 'Painfully Slow,' Say Christian Agencies

By Ethan Cole|Christian Post Reporter

International Christian aid agencies say that while there are a few commendable aspects about the G8 summit, progress for the climate change issue has been “painfully slow.”

G8 leaders meeting in Italy this week agreed for the first time to “reduce our emissions by 80 percent” by 2050. However, the leaders failed to agree on using the 1990 baseline to determine the exact goal of the emission cuts. Aid agencies say establishing a baseline is critical to making the commitment meaningful.

In another step of progress, the world’s richest countries for the first time agreed that the average global temperatures should not rise above 2 degrees – the level scientists say going above would be dangerous.

The G8 representatives, however, were criticized for not providing leadership on financing the efforts to achieve this goal.

“When the language of the communiqué is so heavily infused with enthusiasm rather than solid action, we have to be skeptical,” commented Joanne Green, head of policy at Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD).

“Although we had a breakthrough of 2 degrees, the emissions targets are not strong enough and not backed up with commitment on funding developing countries’ strategy for coping with climate change,” she said.

Part of the problem is that developing countries, including China and India, feel it is unfair to expect them to finance the climate change adjustments necessary to reduce emissions.

During the annual G8 summit, leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to the 2005 pledge to double aid to Africa by 2010. But aid agencies expressed skepticism, noting that Italy and France failed to deliver on their previous promise.

Leaders also discussed how to reform the economy, but were criticized for not providing details on how they plan to achieve the reforms.

Some "christian" organization blabbering about "climate change" is obviously on the forefront of creating a one world religion! Be careful of any "christian" that dives in with political propaganda agendas. I find this story repulsive on so many levels! I guess their not a food shortage in poor countries, no malaria killing children (with DDT banned), no one left on earth to bring to Christ, no knowledge of the hundreds of scientists saying global warming is a hoax, and on and on!!

Have these people felt seen the effect of shade? Pollution = Shade = Cooling. I don't advocate out of control pollution, but I do adhor the theft of freedom and liberty in the name a CLIMATE PONZI SCHEME!! God Bless for our kingdom is not of this fallen world!

What business do Christian outreach organizations have in commenting on science topics? Do any of you have a background in science? I doubt it. Go to ICECAP.org and read what (a majority of) climatologists and meteorologists have to say about the subject. You're getting silly over this "stewardship of the earth" belief, aren't you? My version of "stewardship of the earth" is to leave the major systems alone and let God manage them.
Trying to be a scientist makes you look foolish along with the rest of the faithful. That is, besides making millions of dollars for Al Gore.

There is no man-made global warming. Go to either www.heartland.org or www.junkscience.com. Better yet, read, "The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming".
Having our globe a little warmer would actually be good for a number of things, like longer food cycles, which means more food production. But the globe isn't getting warmer, its getting cooler, especially since 1998.
Something that would be much better (in saving lives) would be the re-introduction of DDT to stop malaria (which currently KILLS over one million kids in Africa alone). Let's stop with the 'politically correct' science and go with real science.
