Change: But in What Direction?

By Ken Connor|Christian Post Guest Columnist

There is no doubt that President Obama's most valuable political asset is his remarkable charisma - his ability to send the spirit of the nation soaring on the wings of hope and change. Among the hopeful visions and promises of change articulated by Mr. Obama in his inaugural speech this past January was a vow to "restore science to its rightful place and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality."

Six months into his term, a picture of the President's understanding of science and its "rightful place" is emerging, and it is anything but flattering. President Obama has repeatedly demonstrated a propensity to elevate "science" over ethical considerations in pursuit of utilitarian goals. He has shown himself to be all too willing to sacrifice principle, morality, and the most vulnerable among us for the sacred "achievements" of social and scientific progress.

This penchant of the President to disregard the importance of protecting innocent human life should come as no surprise. As a state senator, Mr. Obama opposed legislation mandating emergency medical treatment for infants who survived an attempted abortion because he felt that a live baby would "add one more burden on a woman." Still, one would hope that President Obama, famed "reconciler of opposites," would find a way to strike a balance between his pro-abortion, pro-"science" constituency and his pro-life supporters.

On the issue of life however, Mr. Obama has thus far proven himself to be unwilling or unable to find that mythical "common ground" he so eloquently spoke of in his commencement address at Notre Dame. In his short time in office, the President has disbanded his council on bioethics (apparently they spent too much time talking about ethics), overturned limits on embryonic stem cell research instituted by President Bush, ended federal funding of abstinence-based education in favor of funding for contraception-based education, lobbied for federal funding for abortion in Washington, D.C., and supported the addition of an abortion provision in the behemoth health care bill currently winding its way through Congress.

Perhaps most revealing is the elimination of the President's Council on Bioethics, a distinguished group of experts who explored the ethical and public policy implications of emerging biomedical developments such as cloning and embryonic stem cell research. The Council provided an important forum for discussing such matters, thereby fostering the development of a reasoned consensus about how to proceed through uncharted territory. One would think that such a role would hold great attraction for President Obama in light of his stated commitment to discussion and debate; yet time and again, Mr. Obama has demonstrated that when it comes to protecting innocent human life, he is unwilling to allow ethical concerns to impede scientific "progress."

Mr. Obama appears to view any "advance" in science as an intrinsic good that is always beneficial to mankind. This is the same mentality that animated the eugenics movement of the early 20th century. In the 21st century, this mentality has given rise to a "disposable man" ethic that dictates that embryonic stem cell research should proceed unencumbered, regardless of its lack of success and regardless of the fact that each tiny embryo dissected in our quest for our improvement or immortality represents the willful destruction of nascent human life. Why would the big O need a council on anything? He has a teleprompter that tells him everything he needs to know! What would be really interesting is if he fired his teleprompter. Wonder WHO tells the teleprompter what to say?

''BRIT, asking me where my "love" and "grace" are? This is a book-worshiping KJV cultist asking me where my "grace" is. Hysterical. I know where YOUR love is, which is with a material object created for political reasons by a corrupt, secular dictator in medieval England. And as for YOUR grace, I certainly can't discern it from any of the gobbledygook you drool out in defense of your pagan KJV idolatry. Though I must say that "If she's saved she wont have a problem with her husband ruling over her" is among the top ten funniest things I've ever read on the Christian Post.''

I'll not comment, this post needs no comment, people will see for themselves.

On his current Ghana tour,at a prenatal health care unit, the President dispensed with official protocol that all rise when the President enters the room, and told the visibly pregnant women present that they may "sit down".
Did that gesture of courtesy-respect extend to the viable life they were carrying within them??? Seeing is not always believing!

Abstinence only education may work in faith based groups fairly well, but it is an abhorent failure in the general population. It always has been. Most teenagers and young people are going to have relationships. The question is, what do we do about that? While we're waiting for them to fight and win against their basic human nature, the least we can do is help make sure they aren't conceiving children they can't care for. There are already enough of those.

We shouldn't abandon principle, but we also have to work in the world where reality is often distinct from principle. We don't want Mary and Johnny to have sex, but the odds are pretty food that they will.

shoreec, it could very well be a direct consequence of sin as brit shared or it could have evolved which would be considered micro-evolution which all large majority of creationists have no problem with. Personally, I would say both were involved if indeed this is true.

    Not evolved.

    Where is your love?

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Matthew 22:37-40.

''Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.'' 1 Corinthians 13:1.

H316, plus you make the assumption that a woman's present mensturation design was a part of God's original design for women when in fact it may not be, but rather one of the consequences of the sin of Adam and Eve.

H316, when you separate abstinence only education without a faith based approach from those with a faith based approach the pregnancy and abortion rates among those with a faith based approach are in fact lower. You can go to the Focus on the Family and True Love Waits websites if you want the statistics on this.

Flagged as inappropriate. show Turning, God does not value all life. He extinguishes it with an unusual disregard for its "sanctity." More children are aborted by God's intelligently-designed menstruation process than the abortionists could ever dream of. As for education, thank you for blithely repeating a meaningless Republican creedal statement, now please actually evaluate the evidence. Rhetoric lies, facts cannot: abstinence-only education leads to more pregnancies, more STDs, and more abortions. Period. And as for which side Obama is on, I think you've confused "God" and "the Republican Party." Which, to your recollection, did Christ talk more about: the poor, or abortion? Can you find anywhere in Christ's teachings where he said that a blastocyst is a life, and that every life is sacred? Oh, wait, let me guess, your pastor told you about one verse in Jeremiah out of context and that's all YOU need, because your God is spelled G-O-P, not J-E-S-U-S. And as for why I'm posting on the Christian Post, it's because of heretics like you and this Connor guy who worship a political party rather than Jesus. hide

  • Sat Jul 11, 2009 4:24 pm Agree: 3   Disagree: 4

Homoousia, why are you even here commenting on the Christian Post?

God values all life. It is written, God knits us together in our mother's womb. What human has the right to abort what God has created. And it is a lie that abortion serves some common good. Any woman I've known has felt deep guilt for having aborted their baby with lasting results. Millions of lives have been lost to abortion. Satan has just moved from having humans sacrifice their children to Moloch, to now having them aborted for their own selfish desires.

On to education, teaching abstinence and the truth about sexual contact so young people can make informed decisions and avoid the consequences is essential. Wise people heed the warning, but fools rush into trouble. If you're not aware of the consequences how can you avoid them.

From the beginning Obama has been on the wrong side of God on so many issues. People care more for having their ears tickled than reading and following God's word. That's why many people that think they are saved are lost because Christ Jesus never known them. You can tell true followers by their repentance and a changed life.

Flagged as inappropriate. show Ken Connor's jaw-dropping ignorance of the basic science of stem cell research is appalling. Not to mention either his ignorance of (or his willingness to lie about) the fact that abstinence-only education results in MORE pregnancies and MORE abortions. But, what does this guy care about results? He's a Republican fundamentalist fanatic. The facts are less important than the rhetoric, and it's so much easier to say 'embryos are people too' than it is to say 'stem-cell research involves blastocysts that have no nucleus and could result in millions of lives being saved." hide
