ELCA Head Urges Clergy to Restrain Divisive Activities

By Joshua A. Goldberg|Christian Post Reporter

The head of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is urging leaders within the denomination to refrain from making decisions that may separate members from one another in the aftermath of the contentious outcomes of last month’s churchwide assembly.

ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson is urging them instead to “engage one another with honesty and respect in renewed and deepened theological conversation informed by an evangelical, missional imagination.”

“My heart aches as I listen to the pain and distress of those who feel confused or even abandoned by others, not only in the decisions of the churchwide assembly but also in the decisions that are being made in congregations and by individuals,” the Lutheran head wrote in a letter Wednesday to leaders within the denomination.

Last month, during the triennial gathering of ELCA’s chief legislative body, delegates voted 559-451 to approve a resolution allowing gays and lesbians in “life-long, monogamous, same gender relationships” to be ordained.

Delegates also adopted a new social statement on human sexuality with exactly the number of votes (676 or two-thirds) needed to pass it. The statement, which emphasizes two principles – trust and bound conscience – addresses a spectrum of topics relevant to human sexuality, including social structures, cohabitation, sexual exploitation, abuse, and homosexuality.

Since the gathering, the largest Lutheran body in America has sparked a flurry of remarks from across denominational lines, including criticisms from other U.S. Lutheran bodies and the United Methodist Church, which last year approved a full communion with ELCA.

Some congregations, meanwhile, have been considering parting ways with ELCA as many feel the denomination is abandoning the authority of Scripture. A few have already started the process.

“I am disappointed that some are encouraging congregations and members to take actions that will diminish our capacity for ministry,” Hanson stated Wednesday.

To the leaders of those flocks, Hanson asked for the “bearing one another's burdens in continued conversation” and “the long-suffering patience that frees us to remain together in mission.”

“Our attentive listening to one another and patient waiting for the Spirit's work in these conversations will be a powerful witness,” Hanson added.

During his opening sermon and oral report to the churchwide assembly last month in Minneapolis, Hanson asked "What shall be our witness? What story shall we tell?"

In his letter Wednesday, the presiding bishop said he believes those questions remain central to ELCA and expressed his hope that ongoing conversations be marked by the signs of a church that lives in faith, hope, and love.

He concluded by recalling the reflection he gave at the end of last month’s assembly.

“We finally meet one another not in our agreements or disagreements, but at the foot of the cross, where God is faithful, where Christ is present with us, and where, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we are one in Christ,” Hanson had stated.

And it is this conviction, he added Wednesday, “that sustains me in my leadership and gives me confident hope.”

With 4.7 million members, ELCA is the largest Lutheran church body in the United States and the fourth largest Protestant body.

Bishop Hanson seems to have missed the turn at 1 John, where The Holy Spirit,by the pen of John writes ... "If we walk in the light as He is in the light then have we fellowship one with the other ... The Holy Spirit writes to us by the hand of Paul not to fellowship with one called a brother if they are walking in uncleanness.not even to eat together. If they continued to sin as such they were to be turned over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh so they might be saved.

I am unspeakably thankful for rolln4him and others' brave and Biblical stand against the apostacy in ELCA. We are not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The ELCA shourl have thought about this outcome before rendering their perverted decision.

AMEN rollin4him 9/24 11:14am. Your comment sure didn't deserve to be flagged! probably sour grapes on the part of one or more of the resident homo perverts.

On flagging Christians on a Christian website -

THIS IS a Christian website, for Christians and others to discuss events relating to Christianity and religious affairs. We are against homosexual sex acts, but we think they are entitled to talk freely without disruption on (homosexual) websites set up for that purpose. THAT is freedom of speech.

Similarly, we believe that homosexuals should not come to a Christian website and flag any Christians for any reason.

I would never go to a homosexual website and I don't even know of any. But if I did, I wouldn't join it, give myself an offensive name, and then start flagging the homosexuals for saying things that a normal person would expect homosexuals to say to a Christian with the stupidity to come to a homosexual site to attack and disrupt them.

Homosexuals shouldn't come to a Christian website to attack and disrupt Christians trying to exercise their freedom of speech.

    To the cowardly flaggers,

There are sad, pathetic souls, who can't form a point of view, and so flag comments they disagree with. And like cowards, they flag comments without claiming responsibility.

From what I've seen, if you flag posts because you disagree with them, all of your posts will probably get flagged - forever.

Never flag and we'll get to read all the ridiculous things others say (if you disagree) or all the pearls of wisdom (if you agree) - and no matter what side you're on, you'll get to read your favorite posters' comments without having to click on "show".

    1) Stop flagging and: we'll all get to read everyone's posts, good or bad.

    2) Keep flagging and: all your posts will get flagged, and you'll have to click on 'show' to see your friends' posts.

It's your choice. If you've been here long enough to see what happens to people who frequently flag, you'll pick #1 and never flag.
If you're either new or just plain stupid (you know one of those people who never gets it, ever since they were a kid), you'll pick #2.

Truth inlove makes sense. If it is the business of the Church toproclaim God's Word (which has made clear divine disfavor of homosexual relationships), where does caving into the pressures of the culture show the respect and reverence for God. If not the Scriptural deity, then which god do you settle for?
More important, if not God's approval, whose approval will you settle for?

Let's see if this comment will get deleted in the name of "tolerance".

I was an ELCA missionary for a number of years. What the ELCA did with this vote is not only to elevate a lie: it will stain what good works the ELCA still has going. Apparently no one in the ELCA leadership bothered to think beyond the 24-hour news cycle and the hope of a few bored compliments from secular news agencies and political factions.

Make no mistake about it: African Christians view this vote with absolute distaste. Many of them are in the front lines fighting (and sometimes dying) for their faith. They wonder why Americans are so arrogant as to believe that they can overturn the Gospel with a vote.

In some ways, however, this has been personally liberating. There is no room in the ELCA anymore for Bible-believing Christians, as this vote made clear, and it is somewhat of a relief to finally know where we stand. My African wife (whom I married while working as a missionary) has often been shocked at the apostasy and unbelief of some American Lutherans. At least now I won't have to keep defending what has become indefensible.

As a life-long ELCA member, I feel betrayed. The Bible is very clear about all issues related to sexuality, including homosexuality. When is the ELCA going to stop making sex the god it worships?

I'll just repost this flagged comment for our Christian members.

    IHS said,

"Nothing more divisive than leaving the Word of God ELCA!"

Two thumbs up for that one.

Exactly. You leave Him and He leaves you. That's how it works. Read the Bible and you know that. If you don't leave Him, He never leaves you. It's that simple.
Just how many people don't understand that is more proof why we need Him to guide us.

    rolln4him said,

"...close your eyes, plug your ears and just hope that there will be no fall out!"

Great reference to the acorn in the White House.
But no, the leaders of the ECLA are not closing their eyes and hoping there won't be any fall out.
There has been a carefully thought out plan for a long time, to stifle opposition, to stack committees, and to persuade people not to quit, using a number of well-crafted tug-at-your-heart phrases.

Anyone who has studied the devious, covert planning of the RFHA and their heretical adherents in churches, knows that faithfully-inclined members in these churches are being bombarded weekly with various phrases, to try and keep them from quitting.

Flagged as inappropriate. show The ELCA’s apostasy is reminiscent of the days of Hosea where their leaders turned their backs to the Lord. “Woe unto them! for they have fled from me: destruction unto them! because they have transgressed against me: though I have redeemed them, yet they have spoken lies against me” (Hosea 7:13). hide

My home church was an ELCA member which went through the difficult process of leaving ELCA and moving to another synods. It amazes me that the pro-homosexual faction including the bishop was all about openness, discussion and allowing space as long as you agreed with them. If you asked questions and asked for an explanation of portions of Scripture and began to imply that you questioned their view you were labeled as a ignorant hick.

My brother was the president of the board at the time & met with the bishop to ask questions. He was an NCAA athlete, owns a multi-million dollar business & is on the board of directors of a regional bank that had to over see the foreclosure of several popular local business but he says none of those experiences prepared him for the condescension and arrogance of the ELCA bishop.

Now that they've "won" the vote all discussion & distension must stop. Funny where was all the talk of stopping disharmonious discussion back when they didn't have the votes to carry the day.

The ELCA leadership is a joke. I think that they're just like the Obama crew. We're going to shove this down your throat, but let's just keep talking and be civil as I'm shoving it down your throat and patting you on the back with a smile - just don't complain, dork. hide
