Poll: Pro-Choice Americans Falling Away

By Audrey Barrick|Christian Post Reporter

Support for abortion is slipping among most demographic and political groups, a new poll revealed this week.

In 2007 and 2008, pro-choice Americans clearly outnumbered pro-lifers 54 percent to 40 percent. But surveys conducted this year by the Pew Research Center showed that views of abortion are about evenly divided, with 47 percent expressing support for legalized abortion and 44 percent expressing opposition.

Declining support for abortion is seen among men and women; whites and Hispanics; Republicans, Democrats and independents; and white Protestants, Catholics, Jews, and the unaffiliated.

Groups that had once clearly preferred keeping abortion legal – such as men, white mainline Protestants, and political independents – are now divided, the Pew report noted.

"The size of the shift is modest, but the consistency with which we see it occurring and the implications it has for the overall dynamics of the debate make it significant," Gregory Smith, a senior researcher at the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, told The New York Times.

Results from the new survey, released Thursday, contrast with those of other recent polls that have shown little change in Americans' views of abortion. New York Times/CBS News polls and an ABC News/Washington Post poll found the majority of Americans still say abortion should be legal, as was the case over a decade ago.

Another major pollster, however, found a similar shift toward the pro-life camp as the Pew report has documented. In May, the Gallup Poll showed that 51 percent of Americans identified themselves as pro-life – the first time a majority of U.S. adults stood against abortion since Gallup began asking the abortion question in 1995. Only 42 percent described themselves as pro-choice.

The Pew Research Center suggested that the election of pro-choice candidate Barack Obama as president may have contributed to the shift in attitude.

Twenty-nine percent of Americans think that President Barack Obama will handle the abortion issue about right while 19 percent worry the president will go too far in supporting abortion rights. Only 4 percent express concern that Obama will not go far enough to support abortion rights.

White evangelicals are most skeptical about Obama wanting to reduce the number of abortions in this country. Only 29 percent believe Obama holds that view. Meanwhile, younger Americans, aged 18-29, are most likely to say Obama favors reducing the number of abortions.

Notably, four in ten Americans are unaware of Obama's position on abortion.

The latest survey also revealed that Americans are more likely to say their religious beliefs are the primary influence on their attitudes toward abortion than their educational or personal experience.

And more than half (52 percent) of Americans say having an abortion is morally wrong.

The Pew survey was conducted Aug. 11-27 among a total of 4,013 adults. The Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan "fact tank" that provides information on the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world. The center's work is carried out by seven projects, including the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life and the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.

Garageguy-well said-if pro life people would just support condom use....
Or maybe adopt one of the millions of unwanted kids...
Or allowed gays to adopt in all 50 states...
It's pretty sick and twisted-once you're out of the womb, the pro lifers don't give two cents for you...

America's infatuation with tolerating the slaughtering of innocent babies in the womb is a direct reason Social Security is going bankrupt today. There are now less working, able-bodied Americans to take the place of this selfish retiring generation. Next, I predict that forced enthanasia will be the returning of the favor from a godless culture.

It is time for America to REPENT Today before it is too late.

"Since the 1970's, we've allowed millions of innocent children to be brutally murdered, because the RFHA told us it was the right thing to do."

Actually, that hyperbole isn't really accurate. Embryos and fetuses are not the same thing as children.

More importantly, if Gibbons or anyone else wants to actually make a difference in the number of abortions they would be well advised to dial back the arrogant, self-righteous snobbery and work hand in hand with pro choice advocates toward the singular achievable goal we all share:

Reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies.

"If the righteous outrage of believers over the evil of abortion could be collectively channeled, abortion as we know it, would end overnight."

I guess all the prayers and holier-than-thou attitudes aren't helping.

Since the 1970's, we've allowed millions of innocent children to be brutally murdered, because the RFHA told us it was the right thing to do.

According to the most recent poll at lifesitenews:
    http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2009/jul/09071301.html

    - 86% of Americans would significantly restrict abortion.

    - 79% of Americans support conscience exemptions on abortion for health care workers. This includes 64% of those who identify as strongly pro-choice.

    - 69% of Americans think that it is appropriate for religious leaders to speak out on abortion.

Who can forget how, after telling us that they (the Radical Feminists pretending to be ordinary women) spoke for all women, we were promised by our government 'leaders' that abortion:

    - would only be allowed in cases of rape or incest or certain, imminent danger to the life of the woman;

    - would have to be approved by a hospital board of senior doctors;

    - would never be used as a method of birth-control (the thought of which horrified most people); and

    - would not be paid for by the tax-paying public majority who were opposed to abortion and believed that life began at conception?

Who can forget how they (the Radical Feminists pretending to be ordinary women) told us that life didn't begin until the baby human was born and breathing on its own?

Who can forget how they told us that before birth, the unborn life-form was only human tissue and not a baby?

Who can forget how they lobbied hard and long to get rid of the hospital boards, claiming that abortion should be a decision made between a woman and her doctor - and how most of us thought this doctor would replace the hospital board?

Who can forget how they (the Radical Feminists pretending to be ordinary women) lobbied loud and often to get governments to pay for abortion, claiming that these vital "reproductive services" should be available to all women, and to not allow all women to choose abortion whenever they felt like it would be "immoral"?

Who can forget that we believed the "womens' liberation movement" was led by ordinary women and that women had the right to choose to commit murder because it was their bodies?

Who will remember what we do to correct this horrible situation caused by our ignorance, and stop the Radical Feminists' Holocaust now?

This is NOT about men controlling women's bodies. This is about the murder of innocent children.

    TGF
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Life begins at conception. Children are a gift from God and belong to both the Father and the Mother. Abortion is the murder of an innocent life. More children have been destroyed by the horrendous methods employed in abortions than in any other mass murder in human history.

I'm suspicious of the wording of any poll that has Americans supporting legal abortion. For decades prolifers have significantly out-polled prochoicers in this nation, an effect seen even more strongly amid the coming generation.
