ELCA Bishops Urge Obama Stay Committed to Mideast Peace Efforts

By Aaron J. Leichman|Christian Post Reporter

Bishops within the largest Lutheran denomination in America are asking President Obama to “remain firm” in his commitment to achieving a just peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

"The U.S. plays a key role in negotiating necessary compromises and in holding both Israel and the Palestinian Authority to their obligations," expressed the presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and 58 of the denomination’s 65 synod bishops.

“We express profound concern at the stalemate that persists and at the fading hopes for a two-state solution due to the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem," the bishops added in their letter to Obama, dated Tuesday. "It is our firm belief that a just resolution is within reach if the United States remains unwavering in its determination to help the parties finally reach agreement."

According to the Rev. Bruce H. Burnside, bishop of the ELCA South-Central Synod of Wisconsin, Tuesday’s letter was sent to demonstrate to the Obama administration and to the Church as a whole that the ELCA “stands behind just peacemaking."

"We hope that the outcome is to encourage these extraordinary moves and to encourage support throughout the ELCA," said Burnside, according to the denomination’s news service. "We see this as an opportunity to speak in both directions, from the church and to the church."

In their letter, the bishops urged the nation’s leadership to insist upon an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land as well as an end to Palestinian violence against Israelis.

The bishops also reiterated "with a deep sense of urgency" their years-old call for a halt to the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, stating that the growth of settlements and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza are "immediate impediments toward finding a just peace."

"The deteriorating conditions in Gaza make a resumption of violence more likely," the bishops stated, while also noting that opening the borders in a "carefully monitored way" that respects Israel’s security needs will contribute to the well being of Palestinians in Gaza and the safety of Israelis in Sderot.

"We continue to offer you our support and prayers as we hold fast to the hope that this region of turmoil can be a land where all of God’s children dwell in peace," they concluded.

A copy of the bishops’ letter to Obama was delivered to members of Congress.

    jar1961,

I'm interested in this comment, "...Luther was a rabid anti semite.", and if you or anyone else can fill in some of the details as to what exactly he said or did that made him an anti semite.

I ask, out of historical interest, and because I know this term is often used (not necessarily by you) to describe anyone who disagrees with the beliefs of the jews, like everyone who is disgusted with homosexual sex acts being labeled as "afraid" or "hateful" of homosexuals - the political term created being "homophobic" and for more effect the term "homophobia", a medical-sounding term.

True "profound concern" should be registering itself against THE source of ME instability and its recently exposed nuclear juggernaut;such concern invariably would have to include, first among equals, its Hamas proxy whose faux "democracy" still sells very well at the UN Human Rights Commission, if not with some major UN players.

The ELCA has been the leader in fashioning a new approach to militant anti-semitism. Their involvement with de-stabilizing the Jewish state of Israel is astounding. You can read about it here:

The histry of Luther is one of incredible contributions to the building of the true church... however, Luther was a rabid anti semite... and sadly also left that mark on Lutheranism....

In case the ELCA hasnt noticed.... Obama is pushing the Middle East towards a nucxlear confrontation thanks to his MArxist Leninist agenda... The ELCA should have a millstone tied aro9und its neck

I read the letter. Nowhere do they use the word "terrorism". In fact, the letter only made a brief, vague reference to "violence", which they tried to apply equally to Jews as well as Palestinians. As if a 14-year-old Jewish girl maimed by a Palestinian nail-bomb is somehow to blame for what happened to her! What's next - the Holocaust was the fault of the Jews as well?

The letter underscored the ELCA's insincerity about peace in the Middle East. They are simply trying to provide political cover for murderous hate groups like the PLO and Hamas.

While I was still a Lutheran I had to apologize repeatedly for the growing anti-Semitism of the ELCA. Thankfully those days are now over.

    Signed: Recovering Lutheran.

The ECLA has chosen to turn to apostasy so Christians don't care any more what ECLA says than they do what the Wiccan says.

As a church about to lose a considerable number of faithful Christians because of their rebellion from God's Will, I can see why they would want to divert attention from the more important issue facing their church and appear important to the rest of America.
Likewise, they are desperately trying to convince members not to quit, not because they're interested in others' salvation, but because they only care about their image and their personal status.

It's fitting that a church organization turning to apostasy would contact the current President, a member of the United Church of Christ, to give him advice.

But Christians are not interested in the advice of apostates.
