LifeChurch.tv of Edmonton, Oklahoma, has developed a free mobile application, YouVersion Live, for any mobile device, enabling churches to share content during live events. The release is slated for October 8, 2009, during the hugely popular Catalyst Conference. Based on the original YouVersion website, an online Bible resource, YouVersion Live adds the ability to share and interact with people in real-time and, like its predecessor, is completely free.
In LifeChurch.tv's September 23rd webinar, Innovation Pastor Bobby Gruenewald stated, "At a high level, we want to create a way that you can take some of the information that you are already communicating via bulletin or printed-type material, and make it very simple for people to put into mobile devices." A church leader can create a YouVersion account, assemble a group within YouVersion Live, and then create an event with an easy "drag-and-drop" feature right on the YouVersion website. The event creator controls every aspect, including what messages and posts are displayed to the group members. YouVersion Live encourages interaction, such as discussing scripture, taking notes, conducting polls, asking questions, submitting prayer requests or even conducting online giving through PayPal, a web-enabled merchant service provider.
With over 2,000,000 people already using LifeChurch.tv's online Bible, YouVersion, Gruenewald envisions this tool as a platform for discussion in Bible studies, youth events, small groups, and even as a supplement for the weekly church bulletin. While not all members of a congregation can be expected to have a web-enabled mobile device, the current growth and adoption rate of the mobile device market will provide a rapidly increasing user-base for churches to reach.
