Southern Baptist President's Surgery Went 'Great,' Says Family

Southern Baptist President Johnny Hunt's surgery to remove a cancerous gland went "great," his family said.

In multiple tweet updates after Thursday's surgery, Hunt's daughter Hollie described the surgery process in positive messages.

"Surgeon just called mom. Surgery is over. Things went well. We should be able to see him soon," read one of Hollie's tweets using Johnny Hunt's twitter account.

In another short message, she uploaded a photo of the family with the surgeon and wrote, "Praise the Lord. Things went great…"

Hunt went into surgery Thursday morning to remove a cancerous prostate. The Southern Baptist leader announced in November that he has prostate cancer and was expecting to have surgery in January.

In a statement released through Baptist Press, the news wire service affiliated with the SBC, Hunt in November said he was "very encouraged" that doctors had discovered the cancer at an early stage. He also shared that his mother had battled cancer and taught him to not ask "Why me?" but rather "Why not me?"

"I believe that the Lord often times allows things to come into our lives, and this, in particular, has been a great reminder of my mortality, and also of a genuine faith that has brought me through everything that I have ever faced; so, the Lord has been speaking encouraging words into my heart," his statement read.

Many fellow Baptist leaders urged their twitter and blog followers to pray for Hunt's surgery to be successful. Among those leaders were Albert Mohler, Jr., president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and Ronnie Floyd, senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Springdale in Springdale, Ark.

The Hunt family said they were touched by all the people who prayed for Johnny Hunt and thanked them for their concern.
