China has promised to offer religious services to foreigners at the 2008 Olympic Games and to have religion play a positive role in the future of the officially atheist country, the top religious affairs official said Wednesday.
Interesting Story. Sadly, knowing China as I do, I fear it's little more than window-dressing

Banning religion is a really bad idea. One thing we have learned from history is that religious movements usually just become more determined in the face of oppression. If China wants to curb the influence of the various religions taking hold in their country they had better find another way.

Mao Zedong said: "Religion is poison." The People's Republic of China has no problem with our children eating lead paint, and they have no problem with foreign visitors practicing their religions in places set aside for the purpose that are off-limits to Chinese citizens.

A public image driven policy does nothing to change the actual repressive crackdown on religious freedom in China. The blatant human rights violations in China only justifies a world-wide boycott of the 2008 Olympics Games.
