Over the past month, Food For The Poor has been able to provide relief to Haiti through the acquisition and delivery of more than 7,100 tons of food, medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, building materials and other goods to support the victims of the Jan. 12 earthquake. The 359 containers have provided lifesaving goods to those suffering from the effects of the earthquake. The people of Haiti have been provided with more than 20 million meals from the rice, beans, canned goods and water shipped into Haiti. Living in abject poverty in Guyana - one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere - can rob a person of their ability to dream. In contrast, Joe and Judy Roetheli's big dreams helped them achieve success and replace once crumbling shacks, and cries of suffering, into self-sustaining villages and tears of joy in that same country.

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Jan. 16, 2010) - In an effort to get as many aid items into Haiti as quickly as possible, Food For The Poor is directing food, water and medical supplies into the Dominican Republic to be sent over the border and into the hands of the hurting Haitian people.

(Jan. 15, 2009) - Food For The Poor's Missions and Travel Director, Leann Chong, is recovering in a Dominican Republic hospital after being pulled from the rubble of a hotel in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Wednesday morning. Chong had lain trapped for 17 hours beneath 3-feet of concrete, chin tucked and face to the floor, since the 7.0-magnitutde earthquake hit the struggling country on Tuesday evening.

Our team from Florida is in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and reported back. Staffer Chris Frosch reported this morning (January 15) that there is dust, debris and "dead bodies everywhere," and little or no cell phone service. Tens of thousands of people are camped out in public parks because of the aftershocks. The team is staying at a Haiti staff member's house. "Last night we all slept in the cars because it was not safe to sleep inside," Frosch said.
Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, has been hit hard by the earthquake. "This is Haiti times 100. People are looking for lost relatives... it's chaos," said Frosch.
This afternoon, our Food For The Poor warehouse in Haiti loaded a 10,000 gallon water purifier into a truck to donate to the International Red Cross..... Read more
