The car is killing me!
Dear Dave,My boyfriend was supposed to help me pay for my car, but he moved out and left me. Now, I can't afford the $500 monthly payment. I work 35 hours a week, but I only make minimum wage. The car is still worth about $19,000, but I owe $20,000 on the loan. What can I do?Rachel
Dear Rachel,You went car crazy, and bought a vehicle that was way out of your league. There'...

BETTER LUCK NEXT YEAR!
By Dwight Short
My first overseas mission coaching assignment was in basketball against a Prep School team in Mombasa, Kenya. The boy's team was coached by a female French teacher who had a better knowledge of French than basketball. As we warmed up, our kids naturally were looking over their shoulders to scout our opponents. They were disorganized at the least and did not exhibit many basketball skills during their warm-ups. Our players walked over to their team and introduced themselves and wished them well. They indicated that their best player hadn't arrived yet but they told us to watch out when Oliver gets on the floor!

I WAS WRONG, CAN YOU FORGIVE ME?
By Dwight Short
These are still the most difficult words for people to speak when it comes to reconciliation. It was this time last year that the economic crisis was getting momentum to take a run off the cliff and send markets and hopes into the abyss. Much of the pessimism our society is experiencing today is a holdover of the false hopes of materialism and trust in things. Perhaps it would be easier for people...

The wrong way to pay off!
Dear Dave,I've got about $15,000 in my 401(k). I also owe about $15,000 on my car, and the payments are killing me. Should I cash in my 401(k) to pay off the car, and free up money in my budget?Misty
Dear Misty,I love the fact that you want to get rid of your car payment, but I don't want you to cash out your retirement plan to make it happen. If you use your 401(k) the...

Another perspective
Dear Dave,I'm a big fan of your work, but I have to ask one question. Why do you advocate belief in religion for dealing with financial hardship, even for those who don't believe in religion?Daniel
Dear Daniel,First, I don't believe that religion is the answer. I do, however, advocate God. I believe with all my heart that there is a God. I also believe that He's in control, a...

YOU ARE INVITED!
By Dwight Short
Long time readers of the Monday Morning Message know that I do not promote very many things on these weekly chats with you. My efforts to enlighten you and share spiritual and Biblical insights are still the central purpose of my efforts in communicating with you. I will try to observe that even this week when I invite each of you to come and visit a new website that is dedicated to greater shareholder involvement, www.shareowners.org .

How to not be a hypocrite
Dear Dave,My husband and I are taking your classes. We own a roofing company. We offer six months, same as cash, and we accept credit cards. What are your feelings about our doing this? Does it make us hypocrites?Monique
Dear Monique,If I accepted credit cards, it would make me an absolutely huge hypocrite, but you don't do what I do for a living.
If this bothers you, ...
