Separation of Church and Sex

By Jesse Duckworth

If we would be honest with ourselves, many of us could say that the world has become so open about sexuality that its influence cannot be denied. Just turn on the television for a moment and I guarantee you'll see something of a sexual nature. Whether it's to sell beer or increase ratings for a television show, sex is shown everywhere!

The problem is that there are no limits to where the media will go in order to sell items or raise television ratings at the expense of influencing our society in a negative way. The messages from radio and television seem to be consistent and that is for men to treat women as objects while women are to feel empowered by exploiting themselves. Not only are we seeing a change in values, but families and the youth are being affected by our "open" sexual society. We can see the devastating results of this from the divorce rates increasing, more teens are getting pregnant, and various sexually transmitted diseases are being spread.

There was a time when a teenager was embarrassed to walk the hallways of their school as a pregnant girl. Today they happily brag about their babies, showing friends the ultrasound photos. I have worked in the public school system for over 10 years and have seen how their behaviors have changed in just a short period of time. Sarah Palin's 18 year old daughter actually told Fox News Greta Van Susteren that the abstinence that her mother preaches is "not realistic at all." Based on the direction that our society is going with sexuality could her prediction be true?

For years the government has spent a lot money for sex education in schools, whether it was "abstinence only" or teaching how to use protection and everything else imaginable in order to stop teen pregnancy and diseases. As a result, things have not changed and our youth have become more sexual and open to everything that society puts on display. The government has also funded millions of dollars to promote marriage since 2005 only to result in fewer marriages and more divorces in America. So my question to you is if the government can't solve the problem, what are Christians or the church doing in order to help fix this the problem? Stay tuned......

In response to brookntresmom, I'm still wonder why young ladies don't get it? But you are right in that at the end of the day a man truly wants a good woman that has morals and carries herself with dignity and class. But to answer your question I believe the women that are promiscuous and have low self-esteem and will do whatever it takes to get attention and feel accepted and validated. I think that deep down inside they really feel "cheap" and hate having to lower their standards to be accepted but the feeling of what they think is love for a moment outweighs the depression and other negative feelings they deal with on a daily basis. What it comes down to is people must love themselves like God loves them. This brings confidence and causes us to walk with more self-esteem. Also you can't talk about issues like this without following a trail back to the parents either there was a bad relationship, negative behaviors displayed before kids, or absent fathers or even mothers.

Thanks for reading my blog and responding. I love to hear from people no matter if they agree or not.

Jesse, I defintely agree that there isn't the stigma that onece was regarding the youth and sexuality. I have often been appauled at some of the things that I have seen on social networking sites with our young ladies proud to show their bodies in ways that are symbolic sexual acts or have sexual connontations. I also noticed that some girls actally WANT to get pregnant. From the other side, what hasn't changed is the male perspective. Young men still continue to want a girl who is not promiscuous. They may be drawn to the sexual girl for just that, but as far as one to take home to mama, men have remained firm on choosing to settle with a woman who isn't that way. So, it makes me wonder why don't girls get it?

In response to janesunshine33, I agree with marriage period. The problem I have are two individuals that are not mentally or financially ready for marriage. Getting married a long time ago at a young age was okay because 18 or 19 year old's actually understood working and responsibility instead of parents being at teens beckon call. The youth today have everything handed to them on a "silver plater" and don't understand fully every aspect of what it means to be married. As we see on television, most of the young hollywood marriage don't work. They think just because of a mutual liking or "love" of one another in a short period of time a marriage will work. In conclusion again I'll say that I'm all for marriage if two mature people can understand commitment, finances, and the sacrifices it takes to dwell together forever. I could go on forever but I hope this answers your question. Don't get me started!!
