The Offering We May Resist

In Romans 12 Paul pleads with his audience of Jews and Gentiles to offer themselves to God as holy, living sacrifices. Up to this point in the epistle much has been said about faith, about God's merciful salvation, and the new resurrection life found in Christ. However, for those who desire to live in the freedom of Christ, there is the necessary giving up of self that must follow.

Homesick

When I was growing up, my father was in the Air Force so I've lived all over the United States and in several countries overseas. I've moved more than forty times, but lost count somewhere after thirty-five. America is home, yet it's not really "home." Being born on foreign soil in Morocco, Africa, I held dual citizenship until I was fifteen, which only adds to my anxiety about where I am truly from. I am American, but feel foreign. I am from everywhere, but hail from nowhere. I've lived in every quadrant of the country, so if you are from the Midwest, so am I. "You're from Des Plaines! Were you ever able to keep lightning bugs alive in a jar overnight?"

Avoiding a Reckless Leap of Faith

In midst of moving and selling our house, I've been facing the nature of living by faith and what it's supposed to look like. While I desire to obey God's lead, I also don't want to take reckless steps under the false assumption that God is leading me into them.

Faith of a Child

Norman English was seven years old in August 1940 and lived adjacent to a Royal Air Force base in England. Bombs fell from German aircraft on and around the base often as the anti-aircraft guns returned fire. To a child it was very exciting: "We used to sit on the fence for a grandstand view of the action! Until the adults came on the scene and sent us down to the shelter. I remember vividly, the...

Eternity: Slow Train Comin' (Part 3)

A few days ago I commented about how the evangelical church is once again beginning to understand its place within the broader Church, within the much larger family of God, and within the much, much larger kingdom of God.God's kingdom. God's family. God's Church. They're not the same, but how are they different?God's family stretches from Adam and Eve to today and beyond. God's family includes all authentic followers of Jesus Christ who belong to the Church. It also includes many others who live outside the Church.

Seeking First God's Kingdom: A Faith That Declutters

It's never all that comfortable to live by faith, putting service of God's Kingdom ahead of accumulating wealth. I'm not sure how well we're doing at it, but we're giving it a go. I've been asking the Lord lately about what it means to seek first the Kingdom of God.

Yes! Jesus loves you

There comes a time when you realize that you are no longer the "individual" you have sought to be your entire life. These are moments when genetics takes over and you suddenly talk just like your mother or have a receding hairline, just like your grandfather. You've lost all control to your DNA code.

Sharing the Faith as Faith

When it comes to sharing our faith with others, I think it's easy for Christians to forget that it is a "faith" we are sharing. On the April 12th, 2009 episode of the radio show This American Life, the story in the show's second act follows a woman's struggles with God and the hope she found in a coach at a Christian high school.

Faith Like a Child, Part 3: Only Eight Months Until Christmas

I've been thinking about Christmas a lot lately. No, I'm not worried about what to buy my wife, my two younger children, my three grown children, my two sons-in-law, and my two (soon to be three) small grandchildren. Instead, I've been wondering why it's often so easy for people to stop believing in Jesus when they "grow up" and "outgrow" the true meaning of Christmas. I've been deeply concerned a...

Faith Like a Child, Part 2

Even as a grown-up, Jesus loved to be with children. Have you ever noticed that some grown-ups love to be around kids, and some people don't? Jesus loved to be with children. During his three and a half years of ministry as an adult, we see Jesus giving an amazing amount of priority to ministry to children. Jesus talks with children, something only parents and grandparents usually did in that cul...

The Most Important Prayer Request that God Never Granted

Jesus knew he would be lifted up for the salvation of all people. He spoke of rising from the dead, even if he first passed through terrible suffering. Nevertheless, he still asked God the Father if there may be another way forward, if he could let the coming terrible hours pass.

When will our faith shine through?

Several years ago, a pastor friend while visiting Cairo, Egypt, entered a mosque and joined a seated group of men. He sat in quiet meditation for nearly an hour before the man next to him turned and asked if he was a follower of Mohammad.

Stopping America's Greatest Epidemic

"My dear friends, if you know people who have wandered away from God's truth, don't write them off. Go after them. Get them back and you will have rescued precious lives from destruction and prevented an epidemic of wandering away from God" (James 5:19-20, Message).

Faith: The Moment of Surrender

My Mom and grandmother always made sure I had a fantastic lunch every day in elementary school. Roast beef, turkey, peanut butter and jelly, and even leftover meatloaf were all regulars in my lunch bag. Sometimes a friend at my table forgot his lunch and if his family didn't drop it off, our teachers would cajole us to share with him.
