Do I Make You Proud?

An Army soldier approaches the row ahead of mine in Section 60 at Arlington Cemetery. I try to maintain my composure as to not disturb his expression of grief, but my tears come faster than I can breathe. The soldier kneels to pray. After a moment, he stands, salutes, and puts something on top of the grave marker. The soldier leaves quietly, returns; then leaves again. I stand motionless and uncertain sensing he may want to talk, but hesitant to interrupt. He comes one more time, so I join him. "Was he a friend of yours?" I ask.

Haunted by the Prayer of Mother Teresa

A while back I had the privilege of joining Suzie Slonaker, Dr. Tony Campolo, Dr. Paul Louis Metzger, Clark Blakeman, and about 20 others for dinner at the Aquariva Restaurant just south of downtown Portland, Oregon. The funny thing about meeting at a hip restaurant on a Monday evening is -- you just about own the place. To say the least, we didn't have a problem hearing each other. And that's a good thing.

The Most Important Prayer Request that God Never Granted

Jesus knew he would be lifted up for the salvation of all people. He spoke of rising from the dead, even if he first passed through terrible suffering. Nevertheless, he still asked God the Father if there may be another way forward, if he could let the coming terrible hours pass.
