Pushing Veterans Toward the Grave

First there were angry senior citizens at town hall meetings, literally fearing for their lives. They're worried that under the President's proposed health care plan they'll be denied critical life-saving services because of their age. There's good reason for their concern. And what's come to light since then won't make them sleep any easier.

The Abortion Reporter

The late August edition of Newsweek profiles someone they call "The Abortion Evangelist." Leroy Carhart of Omaha, Nebraska was a colleague and also a friend of notorious and recently-murdered late term abortionist George Tiller. The two were confidants. They'd call each other to discuss tough patients.  Carhart says, "We became each other's therapists."  In their line of work you'd need therapy.

Beware of Compromise

With all the rumors about reaching a compromise on healthcare reform, let me say this. Don't believe it! Recent developments provide absolutely no protection for unborn babies and their mothers from abortion, or our vulnerable citizens from rationing.

Keep Taxpayer-Funded Abortion Out of Health Care

A recent article in Advertising Age deals with the Obama Administration's push for health care reform.  Writer Michael Bush begins this way:  "For a president and an administration that seemed to play the PR and communications game better than almost any that preceded them, President Barack Obama and his staff appear to have lost control of the messaging in the health-care reform debate,...

Mankind Project goes transparent

In 2007, I took some heat over my interest in and criticism of the Mankind Project. My initial interest was sparked by the suicide of Michael Scinto shortly after attending a New Warriors Training Adventure, the signature program of MKP. In addition to my interest in strange approaches to counseling, this program was doubly intriguing because reparative therapists and their supporters (e.g., Joe Nicolosi, Richard Cohen, Arthur Goldberg, Paul Miller, NARTH) recommend NWTA as a way to reduce same-sex attractions.

US News and World Report on gays, the APA and changing churches

Today on the website of US News and World Report, Dan Gilgoff's God and Country blog carried a post of mine titled, Does the American Psychological Association Want Gays to Switch Churches? Some writers and commenters erroneously reported that the new APA report on therapy and sexual orientation pushed people away from conservative churches. Not so.

HEALTH CARE REFORM WOULD FUND ABORTION

CBS News Anchor Katie Couric asked President Obama last month whether he advocates federal funding of abortion in government-subsidized health care.  The president answered that he'd "rather not wade into" the issue. He mentioned a "tradition" of excluding funding for abortions but did not say whether or not he supports that tradition.  In recent days, his Administration created a website to debunk the opposition's arguments against current plans for health care reform. Notably missing from the site is any mention of the criticism that the plan will lead to federal funding of abortion.

World Magazine on the APA task force

Alisa Harris at World Magazine has a web only article out today discussing the APA task force report. David Pruden at NARTH, NARTH's press release and I are quoted. There are a couple of points in the NARTH presser that are incorrect.

Thoughts on the Sexual Reorientation Wars: Time for a truce?

So now that the dust has started to settle from the APA convention in Toronto, let's review the status of the Reorientation Wars. Does therapy change orientation? In anticipation of the APA's report, NARTH fired an opening salvo with their paper (What Research Shows...). Perhaps sensing, incorrectly as it turns out, that the APA would advocate a ban on reorientation therapy, NARTH tossed every p...

Wall Street Journal covers sexual identity therapy and the APA task force report

The Wall Street Journal's Stephanie Simon has captured well the application of the APA task force sexual orientation report in an article which ran last Thursday. Of course I would say that...

Recession and Divorce

A recent front page Wall Street Journal story is titled "What God Has Joined Together, Recession Makes Hard to Put Asunder."  Writer Jennifer Levitz details the ways in which couples on the verge of divorce are coping with the fact that...they just can't afford to split.  She reports that "many couples are delaying the decision to dissolve marriages" because they've run the numbers and t...

Follow up study of Exodus participants presented at the APA convention

This morning at the American Psychological Association annual convention, Stanton Jones and Mark Yarhouse are presenting their Time 6 and final follow up to the study of Exodus participants seeking change of orientation. The paper is titled, Ex Gays? An Extended Longitudinal Study of Attempted Religiously Mediated Change in Sexual Orientation. They are presenting these data as a part of a APA symposium titled Sexual Orientation and Faith Tradition Symposium chaired by Dean Byrd.

Earlier today, the American Psychological Association governing board received the report of the Task Force on Appropriate Therapeutic Response to Sexual Orientation. With this post, I want to comment on the paper and recommendations made by the Task Force.
