In our pluralistic diversity-laden society, there is a good chance that even you have at least one vegetarian in your family.

One study from the Vegetarian Times (yes they do exist), estimated that as many as 22.8 million Americans are either vegetarian, vegan, or "inclined" toward a vegetarian diet.

For some households, this can be a bit tense, with awkward points about what someone or their child should or shouldn't eat.

For the Christian home dealing with such a matter, below are some Bible verses and passages that deal with different diets. The last one is a friendly reminder to those predominantly vegetarian families who may have a meat-eater in their ranks.

1. Daniel 1:11-16

"Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 'Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.' So he agreed to this and tested them for 10 days.

At the end of the 10 days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead."

2. Romans 14:20-21

"Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall."

3. Romans 14:3

"The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them."

4. Colossians 2:16

"Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day."

5. Acts 10:9-16

"About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw Heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to Earth by its four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds."

"Then a voice told him, 'Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.' 'Surely not, Lord!' Peter replied. 'I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.' The voice spoke to him a second time, 'Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.' This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to Heaven."
