  • Herman Cain Wins Tea Party’s On-Site Presidential Straw Poll

We can only hope that with Newt's conversion, he'll embrace the Church's stance on social justice becoming, finally, a truly compassionate conservative. There's no denying Gringrich is a smart man, but he's always been in need of more of a heart, Maybe the church will help provide that transformation for him.

Huckabee's a charlatan. He repeated several times on Fox news that Obama was born in Kenya when he knows it not to be true, He gave a half-hearted defense of Obama's Christianity, leaving a lot of wiggle room if he's ever called out by his tea party cronies. There is no excuse, biblical or otherwise, for the immoral and reprehensible conduct of this church, When your religious beliefs lead you to abandon common decency, dishonor patriots and their families and purposely cause hurt and grief to those already in pain, having lost a loved one in service to the nation, it's time to re-evaluate your response to what you perceive as sin. Your actions are, beyond a doubt, far more sinful than anything you're protesting. These are the tow Great Commandments and do not need to be prioritized. If you fail in one, you fail in both. So many tout their "personal relationship" and their Bible reading as proof of their goodness. Well, I've seen those people treat their family and neighbors like garbage and they still have the mistaken impression - yes, mistaken - that they are good Christians. Again, not true. Jesus gave us responsibility to love our neighbor, not render him irrelevant because of your "relationship." Christians will act in a loving, compassionate manner in their dealings with others or they have failed as Christians. Jesus is your personla savior, not your personal excuse.less

Is debt a serious enough "Christian" issue to end the obscene billions of dpllars in subsidies to oil companies and to close the corporate tax loopholes that allow them to pay zero taxes? Ir is it only the less conservative programs that deserve the axe?

I resent the GOP cutting social programs for the most vulnerable Americans in these horrible economic times when people need help the most. I really resent that they try to disguise their ideological agenda as fiscal prudence. There is so mych fat to be cut in the budget before you even consider making people's lives more difficult by cutting funding for needed socia programs, social security or unemployment benefits.

And silly gestures like ending the paltry funding for PBS, Americorp and Title X save next to nothing and are pure political pandering to the base tea party extremists. Until you've found the waste and cut all the fat, you have no business cutting the meat. How about cutting the billions in subsidies we give to Big Oil and other energy companies? That's certainly preferable to gutting the EPA and OSHA who are underfunded and understaffed already. More politics at a time we need common sense solutions, not ideological warfare. The Congressional right has truly lost it's social conscience.less

  • Ore. Lawmakers to Consider Ending Faith Healing Defense

"Good Christians" do bad things and still think they're good. So many use Jesus, not as their personal Savior, but their personal excuse. That's the problem with once saved, always saved, no responsibility, no repercussions, no accountability for sin.

People who believe in the Bible aren't all fundamentalists, just the ones who don't have the advantage of authoritative interpretation based on centuries of theological study. People who buy the creation museum, for example, are fundamentalists because they wrongly interpret Scripture to cover something it was never intended to.

Faith healing parents should not be exempt from anything, if they allow innocent children to die because they won't get them basic medical care. We charge people with animal cruelty for neglecting their pets. We should do no less for our children.

  • Honk If You Love Anti-Christian Bumper Stickers

BYW, I resent the author's assertion that if you sport an evolved fish you are an unbeliever. That's presumptuous and, plainly, wrong. Millions of Christians accept evolution and see no conflict with their faith. It's only the literal 6 day, young earth crowd who could make such a ludicrous statement and, as a Christian, I have to take serious issue with such nonsense.

The evolving fish isn't anti-Christian, just anti-ignorance and pro-science. There is not "better way" where facts are concerned. They are or they aren't. People who sport the evolving fish are probably tired of being lumped in with the creation museum crowd that make Christians look uneducated and silly.

And the opposite is just as true, that along with a vigorous defense of faith, we can also most often find a vigorous defense of evolution as part of God's plan for Creation. You don't have to close your eyes to the knowledge God has granted us through science to maintain your faith. The exact process of Creation is largely irrelevant if one acknowledges God as the Creator. It certainly saves the silly circumlocution that occurs trying to explain away the human fossil record.
