"And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who in in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him." MT6:5-8

Sorry to sound like another "leftwing nutcase," but exactly what "values" are "conservatives" advocating these days? I hope it's not the same old canards like "fiscal responsibility" and "limited government" and "traditional values" because you have been found very wanting in these matters during your most recent exercise of power and beyond. Let's face it guys and gals, you've thought of nothing and you're fresh out of ideas. Instead of yelling the sky is falling, tell us your ideas on the urgent matters of the day. It's not Obama's birth certificate.

Oh, and please read the most recent opinion piece by Bill Maher (I know, not a Christian, an atheist; go ahead and flag now) as he outlines the case that not all services in the United States should be for profit.

Sotomayor is the most qualified supreme court nominee in several generations, and her rulings display an admirable independence of mind that belies our current political culture. She would be the first Latino/a to serve on the high court. Listen to those who will vote against her to gain insight into why the Republican brand does not play in the more modern regions of the country.
I basically agree with the "flagged as inappropriate" post -- most "Christian" Republicans really worship free market capitalism, which is not "free" and fair, but would rather further enrich the wealthy. Jesus clearly warned us about you. Now go ahead, Christians, and flag this as offensive.

By the way, a great movie that wrestles with the abortion issue (and more) is "JUNO" -- whatever your views on the topic, see this movie (cool music, too).

Rhi Bran, just read your post re Obama meeting the Pope and the hypocrisy of the Catholic Right. You are the wisest voice on these message boards! Cheers to you! Your post below is right on as well: most people are reasonable, and seek a way to lessen abortion through education rather than extremism.
Food for thought: If Roe were ever overturned (doubtful, but anything is possible) it would be the end of the Republican Party in national electoral politics. They're becoming an extremist, regional party as it is, the end of Roe would just seal their marginalization.
Rhi Bran hits the nail on the head -- Where is the outrage from the right-wing Catholics toward the Pope about his invitation to meet with Obama, when they were belly-aching over the Prez's ND speech?
Oh, and by the way, all you "Christians" who hate the Pope, the Catholic Church, Catholics and President Obama, can't wait till the next election when you further drive Catholics out of the Republican Party. You're not too smart, and you're very far from Jesus. Say it with me now: Pres-i-dent O-ba-ma. Now get used to it.

Isn't it amazing that in 2009, in the country that put a man on the moon 40 years ago Monday, the same country that cracked the atom, that there are folks who deny basic science in favor of complete superstition? And before you start calling me "elitist trash," I say to you I am a huge fan of Jesus the philosopher.
Some thoughts to chew on: F. Scott Fitzgerald said a sign of true intelligence is the ability to grasp two totally contradictory ideas; and don't forget that at the Scopes'Trial (1925) it was the side arguing against evolution and for creationism that ended up looking like monkeys.

Listen to yourselves, you reactionaries. As if Obama has anything to learn about Christ from the likes of small-minded, judgmental hypocrites like you. Your interpretation of the Bible boils down to "Republicans good, Democrats bad." As the President (you must hate it that a black Democrat has that title) said in his inauguration speech: It is time to put away childish things.

Have you ever considered that hating a group of people because of their sexual orientation, something they did not choose for themselves, is contrary to the teachings of Jesus? Yes, a spiritually and intellectually enlightened person like Barack Obama would never choose a church that espouses hate, as Christ taught us not to hate. Why do you see the speck in another's eye, and not the plank in your own. Now go say some Hail Marys and hate no more.

Now that was just too easy, holyrolln. Take a deep breath and count to ten. Stay away from your guns and don't go near your dog for a spell. Do you have any Allman Brothers, brother? Perhaps it's a beautiful afternoon wherever you are, so take a walk or something. Me? I'm gonna watch the second half of US-Brazil and sip a cold beer at my local pub. I do hope you figure it all out someday. ET

It's amazing how much your posts sound just like Jesus, "rolln4him." With all due respect, it's "Christians" like you who turn many people away from the true teachings of Christ. Love, "Elitist trash"
Oh, and by the way, I'm really happy that you're using your time, energy and bumber sticker space arguing whether Obama is a citizen or not -- a waste of time that only makes you look like some small-minded conspiracy theorist, and not someone to be taken seriously.

DP, I just watched David Axelrod on Meet the Press say that Sanford's future is for him, his party and the people of SC to decide. I cannot think of one Dem who has called for his resignation. If the SC Dems are, then that is something that is not being covered in the national media, or in LA. And I'm afraid you rather miss the point about hypocrisy: When the Reps bang the Bible and speak of how they are proponents of moral rectitude, but then very publicly fail morally, as all people do, they look foolish and hypocritical. It's a risky political game throwing stones while living in glass houses. Not trying to be partisan, just pointing out what I think is obvious. (Did you read Matt 6:1-8, by the way?) Although most pundits I listened to (sorry, not FOX) thought the governor's news conference was a disaster, I tend to agree with you that he came across as sincere, contrite and ... very much in love with someone who was not this wife -- honest indeed. One final thing, and I'm not trying to me mean, but helpful, misspelling ("rhetoric") and misusing ("their" vs. "they're") words, in addition to making inane comparisons between people you disagree with and Nazis, only serve to undermine your arguments and make your state's education system look bad/worse. Cheerio

Why doesn't the CP have an article about the governor and senator, very public Christians, who have cheated on their wives? I'm not a hater, it's just that Jesus was so plain in his warnings about hypocrisy and public displays of piety. Please re-read Matt 6:1-8. I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll get flagged/censored for saying in this forum, but it seems that the CP is really just a vehicle for the political success of the Rep. Party. And yes, "Dems do it too," the difference is they don't claim to be holier than thou. Peace

The Christian Post censors responsible rebukes to this claptrap. Just like Liberty University disbanding its nascent Democratic Club, this newspaper is really just an arm of the Republican Party. If Big Brother won't allow me to respond to these "great posts," don't send your publication to me anymore, since you really don't want discussion, just obedience.

You "Christians," once again, are giving those who follow the teachings of Jesus a bad name. Trust me, so many people in the world cannot call themselves Christians because those who do sound and act like the pharisees that the Lord warned us against. The Talibanic "Christians" who claim to speak for Jesus, but who are really just devoted to the cult of the Republican Party, should re-visit the Beatitudes, and quickly: Blessed are those who mourn ... are the meek ... are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness ... Blessed are the merciful ... the pure of heart ... the peacemakers. Blessed are the Lawyers for Christian groups who advise the Senate to vote no on protecting gay folk from abuse and discrimination. Wow!

Greetings to readers of this web site. I have a contrarian view I hope you will consider. Students, alumni, faculty and fans of Notre Dame are well within their basic rights to protest the appearance of President Obama if they do not share his opinions regarding abortion and stem cell research. But I must respectfully ask if they also protested the speech made my President Bush in 2001 over his support of the death penalty, or if they had moral misgivings about his support for tax cuts for the very wealthiest among us, or his prosecution of an unjust war, to mention just a few of his questinable policies viv-a-vis the words of Jesus. If you are consistent in your adherence to the teachings of Christ, then all of these issues are troublesome, not just the ones that the Republican Party tells you to pay attention to. I saw a quote today in the NYT article regarding this topic from a ND professor who said, basically, the protesters are really only disgruntled Republicans who voted against Obama and are currently playing out their grudge. If this is the case, then the hubbub in South Bend is nothing more than the intellectual dishonesty rampant in our current political culture. Peace and love to all of you.
On our own we are little more than bits of stone and glass. Together we are the Body of Christ. Holy Bible: Mosaic is an invitation to experience Christ in His Word and in the responses of his people. Each week, as you reflect on guided Scripture readings aligned with the church seasons, you will receive a wealth of insight from historical and contemporary writings.
