  • America Has Chosen a President

This is the best and most truthful article I have read since last night's annoucement that our new President Elect is Senator Obama. I also believe that many Christians have placed demands upon God to "elect this person over that person" rather than bowing our heads and praying that "Thy will be done". Scriptures teach that Christians are not to place their trust in man (or woman) but rather, "trust God". I trust God to continue using world leaders/rulers/kings/Queens for His purposes, and with that in mind, I look forward to the days ahead, while praying for President Elect Obama.

    Believer -

You have just described a believer's "balanced" life.

Witnessing to others can be frightening to many Christians. Distributing a tract to little children has led entire families to Christ. Tracts are thought-provoking. There is a publishing company that uses comic book style tracts to get the message out to millions; placing one in a tiny bag of candy may go a long way to leading a child (or child's parents) to the Lord. What an opportunity!

Compassion for those suffering is not un-Biblical. Jesus gave a very good example of those who would do things in "His name", such as, feed the poor, visit those in prison, etc." and He went on to say, "I never knew you."

Abortion is a major issue, but it isn't the only issue confronting believers. If that were so, the entire Bible would speak on only ONE issue. I do not make light of the abortions, but neither should anyone make light of the sufferings of our brothers and sisters in Christ in all areas of their lives. Peace!

Our dear Lord said the poor we shall always have with us and with today's economy crisis, many who were once able to assist the poor and needy, are becoming needful themselves. Our church family recognizes that members are needing assistance with food, fuel for their homes, and gas in their vehicles and we are doing our best to help those in need. Homeschooling mom's are stretched to the limits simply because they have chosen to teach their children at home, rather than work full time. I think of the "early" church where each shared what they had with others and that is becoming the "norm" among Christians today. With "Blessed Assurance" may we begin to "Count our Blessings". Amen!

With Bible illiteracy plaguing Christians .... the article begins ......

HA HA! Had to put my smiley face on just reading the introduction of this article. Hold the presses - stop right there - don't go any futher! I realize that among Christians, there are "babes" feeding off the milk of His Word, and there are some who are enjoying the meat of His Word - but are there really some who call themselves "Christian", while being ignorant of His Word? I must be missing something here ...... !

    Thank you, believer,
for your kind words. That message and Evanglist who preached the message truly gave all of us that day much to ponder. I cannot do it justice - wish you could have heard the sermon. Carter was President at the time and sermon was given on 4th of July. I have tried giving it as an example when my children first started out in this world and we talked about "responsibilities" of Christians in this world.

I have notes from a sermon I once heard approximately 20 years ago. The sermon centered around Ecc 10:7 - "I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth." The jest of the message was that this world (and our country) is turning upside down much the same way it would be if a "servant" were riding, while the "prince" were walking. To Believers, the message was that when we allow ourselves to become too complacent, too matter-of-fact, and are not placing our complete trust in God, but rather in the ignorance of the world around us (whether it be men/job/fulfilling our wants, rather than our needs) ... this nation will suffer the consequences.

Twenty years have passed since I first heard that message and the upcoming elections, the fights over who is or is not a Christian candidate, the conditions and suffering this nation is facing are reminders that if we, as Christians, do not bend our knees and pray for His holy guidance and begin placing our complete trust in God and our Saviour, we would not be able to recognize or be able to discern the Christians from those who are unbelievers, and the servants will ride this nation, while the princes (leaders) are cast aside.

Since we are told that we shall know them by their fruits (actions/deeds/behavor), it is not a matter of forgiveness, it is a matter of discerning the qualities of the lives of the candidates. We are not seeking to elect a pastor/preacher - we're speaking of politicians: men and women, who have in the past professed to be Christians but have proven differently once in office. Therefore, I am saying that there is a need for much discernemtn, study of the backgrounds of each canddiate, and much prayer before voting.

    justamom -
Thank you! I do agree that sin is sin, and since none of us claim to be perfect, I stated my reasons for questioning McCain's past behavior in regards to adultry. However, I see I have already been "flaged" for sharing that opinion ... I could understand it, if I had not spoken the truth, from my own heart. Has this blog become strictly speech for one side/candidate?

Spurgeon and Wesley would weep to see how greatly faith has declined in the United Kingdom. From all the news articles throughout America, can we be far behind? This is troubling and while we may excuse it as "signs of the times", it should make all believers want to reach out and speak up about God's love towards us through Jesus Christ. Silence is not always "golden".

As a believer, I have prayed for discernment in choosing the "right" candidate. I understand the argument about Obama's choices regarding the abortion issue and understand that it would be correct, according to my beliefs, to vote for the other candidate.

However, as a believer, I know that God hates sin and there sure a numerous lists throughout the Bible. What deeply concerns me, as a cancer survivor, is that we all know McCain left his first wife (also a cancer patient) and I can't imagine how I would have felt if my husband abandoned me throughout my struggles with this disease. It is also deeply troubling to me that McCain's VP has no troubling inciting hate during her rallies, and some of her comments are not Christ-like. It is not the Press/News Media that causes confusion for Christians; it is how both sides are behaving throughout their campaigns, and each of us must ask our Lord, who actually represents His values? our morals? I haven't found a "pat" answer yet, and voting begins in two weeks.

I think from looking at all the flags and deleted comments, this may be a sure sign that politics and religion do not mix well. While I may disagree with someone's opinion, I still would prefer that everyone have an opportunity to speak what is on their minds.

When a person professes to be a Christian and takes her faith seriously; and then has no qualms attacking another candidate by making reference that he's a Muslim, that he's un-American, he palls around with terrorists, he's a socialist, and incites crowds to yell "kill him" - I hardly feel she can be serious when making claims that "her" faith is mocked. Faith in Christ should not hold to double standards. This campaign has been one of the worse in our history!

Religion or one's faith has been a free for all for many years. While it should be "off limits", it seems to be one of the most used/abused issues in today's society. There was also a time when the issues facing our nation were discussed more than one's personal life and choices; today one's character is attacked as freely as an individual's faith. Signs of the times and many do not have their priorities straight. I do not agree with Palin's particular church teachings, but she certainly must be aware that anything and everything is no longer taboo when it comes to politics.
