Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. (JN 8:32)
Davy and Goliath was probably beyond a mere creative idea born out of a brainstorming session. All things considered, God's fingerprints are all over this amazingly, lastingly fruitful project. It was a God-inspired idea!
This creative show (financed by the then existing Lutheran Church of America, generally theologically liberal in its day, but they were financially committed to this outreach) touched millions of children's lives. Like another reader, I very rarely went to church - thought it was nonsense. Felt no love, no acceptance. I begged my mom to let me stay home to watch Johnny Quest and Davy and Goliath. She usually relented.
Jesus spoke of the 'seed' that goes into the soil of the heart that in time bears fruit. There are today millions of Baby Boomer generation not-yet believers who were long ago 'seeded' with biblically based truths thanks to Davy and Goliath.
Paul said "I planted, Apollos watered, God brought about the harvest" (1 Cor. 3:6). Harvesting is God's accomplishment every time - after faithful 'seed flinging' has been done aplenty by God's imperfect people (flingers).
Today I aspire to begin to pray with fresh enthusiasm for the Boomer generation and the millions of seeds scattered long ago by these simple animations.
As Yogi Berra said, "It ain't over till it's over." With far more non-believing Boomers than otherwise, the Boomers are a jaded, spiritually confused, syncretistic - yet open to authentic spirituality group. Let's look for the open doors of the heart with these peculiar people. As Pogo said, 'I are one' - Boomer, that is.

'Unchurched' - there has to be a more inaccurate word to describe the lost... but it would take a gathering of gifted wordsmiths to come up with it.
The term 'Unchurched' is utterly unbiblical and misleading - always has been if one takes the time to ponder the word. The implication is that by merely being 'Churched' something redemptive occurs. Hello. Where exactly is a single church on planet Earth that causes someone to be redeemed by merely walking through the doors? In Heaven - yes. Not not in this life.
This is a seeker-focused term that has been completely worn out. Hybles and co. and Willow have recently admitted that much of what they sought to convey is officially not effective.
As a beginning point, let's retire this term now lest we confuse not-yet believers who might actually read such terms and consider that if they become 'Churched' something transformational has taken place...

I have no vested interest in defending Warren.
This piece is written in such a strikingly attacking way, it is difficult to get to wade through the original story posted by the San Diego newspaper to cull out the original story before commentary was added by the writer.
Rick Warren, pro or con, it is this kind of 'journalism' that causes the watching world to read articles such as this, shake their heads and wonder, "What the heck...?" Or if you are Yiddish, "Vat the heck...?"
On our own we are little more than bits of stone and glass. Together we are the Body of Christ. Holy Bible: Mosaic is an invitation to experience Christ in His Word and in the responses of his people. Each week, as you reflect on guided Scripture readings aligned with the church seasons, you will receive a wealth of insight from historical and contemporary writings.
