I would like to pick up on another thread of this conversation that was in reference to the Emerging Church. Throughitall said that emergents would find what this young pastor is doing is impossible--being different from the culture and being unfashionable. I have not had a chance to read the book, but wouldn't you say that being different from the culture is more online with its thought patterns and ethics rather than what the culture does? For instance, if I am an artist shouldn't I learn everything about being an artist that the culture has learned? In this way I will be able to communicate intelligently with other artists and in some way share my faith and be different by not using my art to promote vulgarity? Does that make sense?

DRJ: Do you take care of your yard or the place in which you live? Isn't that the same as being a good steward of what God has given? Isn't that energy that could be well spent on reaching people for Christ? Do you think an unkempt yard would be fuel for non-believers against Christ because of their annoyance over your disregard for others? I see nothing wrong with what these people did. In the past, "Christians" have been a terrible witness as they have used the doctrine of Manifest Destiny to get their way in the world, using the name of God to sanction murder, the rape of the environment and the displacement of cultures. They were in fact witnessing as they blessed the trees and sang hymns. They are also showing that Christians care about the things that preChristians care about. It's something good. Don't knock it. Christians (and Jewish people) are actually working together instead of fighting over doctrine!

Instead of blaming presidents and calling for them to take a cut in salary, why don't you investigate your local congress person or senator to see if they have voted in favor of pay raises and insurance increases for themselves? They do this often. They don't care that many American workers are just grateful to have jobs.
On our own we are little more than bits of stone and glass. Together we are the Body of Christ. Holy Bible: Mosaic is an invitation to experience Christ in His Word and in the responses of his people. Each week, as you reflect on guided Scripture readings aligned with the church seasons, you will receive a wealth of insight from historical and contemporary writings.
