'Spanish palaeontologists have uncovered a new dinosaur with what may be the earliest evidence of feather follicles.

The researchers, whose findings are published in Nature, located the fossils near Cuenca, central Spain.

They named the reptile Concavenator corcovatus, meaning "meat eater from Cuenca with a hump". The type of dinosaur that was found is known as a theropod. …Theropods are a very important group of dinosaurs because it is from this group that birds are known to originate. Most theropods, like the one found in Spain, are meat-eaters, though some were omnivores.

"They are a very important group of dinosaurs because within this group there are the birds. This world would not be the same without birds. Birds are really a kind of specialised winged and flying theropod dinosaur," said Professor Jose Sanz of the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid--By Katie Alcock Science reporter, BBC Newsless

The dinosaur belongs to a sub-branch of the theropods, the dinosaur group which includes T.rex and Velociraptor, and which gave rise to modern birds.

Details are published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The new species was named after the Chinese city of Linhe, Inner Mongolia, near where its fossilised remains was uncovered in what is called the Upper Cretaceous Wulansuhai Formation.

The international team found a partial skeleton, including bones of the vertebrae, forelimb, hind limbs, and a partial pelvis.

It is part of the Alvarezsauroidea family of theropods, a group of small, long-legged dinosaurs, known for their strange and tiny arms."less

South Africa: New dinosaur transitional species found: Fossilized bones from a new species of dinosaur have been unearthed by paleontologist Adam Yates and his team from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. It appears to be what is commonly called a "missing link." It has features of both two legged herbivores known as prosauropods and four legged herbivores known as sauropods. It was able to move efficiently on either two or four legs.

Dr. Yates doesn't like the term "missing link" because it implies that evolution unfolded in a neat, linear fashion. He said that A. celestae is: "... one of the dinosaurs in a long, smeary continuum. It shows us what we should already have pretty much guessed, which was that evolution was a messy, complicated affair."

Paleobiologist and functional morphologist Matthew Bonnan of Western Illinois University was part of the team. He studies fossil bones to determine how animals moved and lived. He said: "This find is very significant because Aardonyx is a transition animal. It's a close cousin of the sauropod dinosaurs. It gives us a window on what was happening very early on in the evolution of those giants." 6

2009-SEP-25: China: Transition fossil found: Several fossils of a profusely feathered dinosaur called Anchiornis huxleyi, have been found in northeastern China. It stood about 28 cm (11 inches) tall at the hip and is estimated to be between 1 and 11 million years older than Archaeopteryx -- the first known bird. The fossils were found in sediments laid down between 151 and 161 million years ago. It has two types of feathers on its body: One type called "dino-fuzz" covers its head and neck. Shafted feathers, like feathers on modern-day birds -- are on each forelimb, lower leg and foot.

"James M. Clark, a vertebrate paleontologist at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. said that with so many species with this arrangement, the four-winged configuration must have been an important phase in the evolutionary transition from dinosaurs to birds."less

Toni Morrison, at her Nobel Lecture on 1993-DEC-07 having received the Nobel Prize for Literature, said: "Oppressive language does more than represent violence. It is violence. It does more than represent the limits of knowledge, it limits knowledge. ... It must be rejected, altered and exposed. It is the language that drinks blood, laps vulnerabilities, tucks its fascist boots under crinolines of respectability and patriotism as it moves relentlessly toward the bottom line and the bottomed-out mind. Sexist language, racist language, theistic language -- all are typical of the policing languages of mastery, and cannot, do not permit new knowledge or encourage the mutual exchange of ideas." hide

Others merely gloss over the really awful stuff. The can for instance be horrified at burning a single child to Moloch but have no problem with the slaughter of entire populations of infants supposedly ordered by God. Likewise they have no issue with the patriarchs engaging in plural marriages, having concubines and sex with servants.
