  • Young People Leaving Hypocrisy, Not Traditional Church

Young people are not running to something, they are looking for something to run to. They see the world differently than our parents did, yet they still hear the same sermons their grandparents were so excited about. The world has changed since then, but its not the change they are concerned about. There is more knowledge and "truth" about the world and the universe today that is different from what previous generations grew up with, and they have to deal with "new" truths that are indisputable, but conflict with what is sometimes being preached from the pulpit. We have 're-interpreted' certain passages of the Bible in the past when there were conflicts, such as the belief in a "flat" earth. Can we not make adjustments today in the same manner that would not make our messages seem so "old-fashioned". Young people want THE TRUTH, not a theology that has been unchanged for 500 years.

To those who believe that God "could have created everything in 5 minutes", I agree, but I have to ask why would He? Why would God deliberately violate the very physical laws he created to control the universe? He has all the time in the world anyway. I have always felt that given a choice between a miraculous solution or a "natural" solution to a problem, He would prefer the natural one, to one that requires a "supernatural" force. People are different. They prefer a miracle to a natural explanation. Whats the difference to God? He created and is responsible for them all, and is still in control. Dr. Francis Collins is "right on" in his beliefs.

Collins is absolutely right on everything except that the Bible is not a science textbook. If it is telling the truth, it is we who fail to recognize if. There are interpretations of Genesis that are completely compatible with science, the development of man, and still hold true to the story of Genesis. Lack of imagination always yields to a 'copout' that the Bible is not science. It most certainly is.
