I have always been agaisnt guarenteed appoinments, but I fear this ruling. I see this as a way for the liberals to funally get rid of the bible preaching/believing pastors in the denomination. It used to be they would just send you out to nowhere. You still got a salary, but usually you were in churches that were mean-spirited, split or full of other problems. Of course, you had people who needed to hear the gospel in those churches.
I notice that there are no comments. The UMC brings apathy so few even consider it. They lost their zeal according to their evangelist Peter cartwrigh by 1812. many believe that the church during the war between the states was the supporter of the right cause. This led many rich into the church. their money talked as they had a works righteousness and wanted to be praised on account of their giving instead of being encountered according to their sin.
ever read about a society which one had to have a ticket in order to attend. There was accountability (many says works and guilt), but I think the wesleys, Asburys, and the fletchers might have had something.

Flagged as inappropriate. show The deeper question here is not a form of treatment to supposedly sanitized sinners, but why would anyone pay attention to a degenerate church. Don't waste time on these non-believers as far as polity. Use the time to share the Gospel with them in order for them to be saved. Redeem the time hide

What a wonderful testimony of what Jesus can do. He will always help the poor in spirit.
Isn't Jesus wonderful

Bujo,
If you have not gotten total help from jesus, it is because you have not gone totally to Him. He is forever there. Drunkeness is a sin and the Blood of jesus cleanses us from all sin. Don't get mad at me, just read what the bible says. I think people really want it, but they are too self centered to submit to Jesus. They usually wait till they are in a jam and say some formula. Jesus will help you out of every jam. He is always interceeding for us. It is his will that we be not drunk as others suppose. The solution is to offer yourself up to Jesus as a living sacrifice and watch Him do it. People love darkness more than the light. I guess that is why Josh said he figured he could just drink one drink when if he had read the bible, he would be told to avoid the near occasion of sin. People say a prayer, but really don't turn over their life to Jesus. That is love of self.
The bible says Jesus never fails. the question is, Do you believe that. Regardless of what you believe truth is truth. jesus is all powerful and man reaps what he sows. josh sowed to the flesh and see what he reaped. Sow to the Spirit and see one living in the peace that passes all understanding.
Jesus is wonderful

As leondard Ravenhill once said: If you gonna publicly speak on how God can do things, you had better pledge your heart to heaven first.
I believe in grace but if grace abounds should sin more abound? Josh should be seeking the Lord and avoiding the near occasion of sin. The christian world needs to stop putting so called celebrities up and should worship God only. Josh's wife dumped him when he had no money, no home or no baseball prospects.
They need to get into the word, find a community of christians, keep out of the spotlight, repent before the Lord and be thankful that they have a King who can and will deliver them from sin.
That is all that matters is that Josh and family get right with God. I do regret that once again, a man made idol falls and the sinners have an excuse to mock God. But as we know, God is not mocked. A man will reap what he sows.
Jesus is wonderful and he, and He alone, can bring full deliverance to this family and everyone else. The problem is man loves darkness because his deeds are evil. Man, even though professing Christ, needs the help of the Holy Spirit in all his ways. Josh needs to pray and seek the Lord.
I still wonder if his wife would defend him if he was broke again and out of ball.

weekender let us look at her history. She was with him when he was a rising star, but dumped him when major league baseball dumped him. he had to go live with his granny. Now since he makes millions with a large large large contract looming, she is defending him.
The problem was is that the christiaN WORLD IS LOOKING FOR SUPERSTARS AND NOT FOR THE HUMBLE SERVANT (JESUS) . HE WAS TOO QUICK ON THE BOOK AND BANQUET CIRCUIT. Our hero and role model according to the bible is Jesus.
Why didn't she stay with him (they had kids) when he was broke, out of baseball and no place to live. Now he is doing some of the same things, but the only difference is that he is rich.
What a horrible witness. He should keep his mouth shut for a long time and mature in the word and walking a walk worthy of the Lord. Then he can go out and be the sensational testimony the itching ears pay to read and hear. Better yet, he can be a humble disciple of Christ instead. That way, he wouldn't get drunk in public and lick stuff off of fake breasts ( Could that be adultery) and he would be a godly father and husband.
Too many times husbands and wives say stuff because they get caught and desire to keep their former image. Josh needs to be discipled in holiness by the washing of the word and not some anti-christian secular groups or psychs.

This is what happens when you lay hands too quickly on a person. They are not tested by time and situations to show a good witness. In today's age of celebrities we can't wait to find one, build them up as role models and praise them. That is wrong as the bible itself says there is wisdom in gray hair. The only praise belongs to jesus who died on the cross, rose again, loves us and will forgive our sins. Our lives is a testimony to Him and not our overcoming of sin. Alcoholism is sin. The bible says it and there has not been on real medical case confirming the disease model. The doctors claim it so the insurance will pay it. people claim it as a disease so they don't have to take personal responsibility over sin. they have an excuse noe. its my disease. Here is the solution ask God for help and then trust in His help and just don't drink.
That will work.

I think she is continuing in a long line of AG preachers: A.A. Allen,Jack Coe, Jim Baker, Jim Swaggert, Austin Mills, Richard Dortch, Oral & Richard Roberts, Wayne Hughes, The Crouchs, Gene Scott and so forth.
it is a glorious church without spot or wrinkle

CCM like so called christian books changed years ago when the secular companies bought the christian ones. I am talking about 30-35 years ago. Music had to be favorable to the masses in order to be monetarily profitable. Repetitious music which could be construed to be sung unto God or to a lover was what got airplay. I know every generation has their favorites and this battle has waged for centuries. What I can't stand is the spirit of those who use this to divide fellowships. It isn't the music, it is the heart of the divider.
I don't like the fad following either which churches have done for years. The churches are in panic and will try anything in a vain attempt to get people to come. They think a contemporary separate service will get new members. They now go to 2 services to avoid conflict over worship. They should be Godly enoungh to resolve their differences. Where is the Godly leadership in this? They are scared about declaring the full counsel of God in church disputes. They are often unprepared to lead a church.
True worship, as written before, comes from a knowledge of the Glory of God. My soul sings when I am able to walk in His spirit and see His glory. All the fuss is not about God, nor is it about music, it is about the backslider at heart.
A problem I do have is when people charge huge amounts of money to praise God, write about God or speak/teach about God. Shame on these.
I see no help from this at all. They have sinned, but yet, they seek a secular institution (SA) for their help instead of God, His word and His church. The only thing I see is their testimony that God isn't suffiencent and they need to turn to worldly answers. The answers won't be found there.

I really hope that his repentence is genuine and the family backs him. My fear is that they seek publicity in this. I have seen too many people try to get back into the ministry by the public telling of their sin testimony. I believe that a period of being out of the spotlight is neccessary. That usually takes many, many years of Godly repentence and living. But if the Lord is using him, so be it. I do know that the prophets are subject to the prophets. I do know people like to hear sinful experiences retold for their entertainment and many a wolf has entewred in sheep's clothing.
I believe further that the proclaimation of God's word has more power than any man's testimony. If I wanted to hear a man's testimony, I would want to hear people who have walked faithfully with the Lord for years and if they fell, they have gotten up and continued for years.

You missed my point. As do most UMC. The church neglects the leading of God and follow business plans for church driven activities when they should be following God's lead. That is why a sign should be in every church. t should read

Or they could put this on the sign
Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit says the Lord
of hosts
or
Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it:
A plan based on man's thinking, man's supposed cleverness or man's desperation will always fail.
The sad truth will be what the UMC will resort to next as the Gospel is not a priority.
it is simple
You preach Jesus
Jeus - nothing more
Jesus - nothing less
Jesus - nothing else
Jeuss is the light which guides all men into truth and that light is powered by the Holy Spirit. It is and has always been the Father's way.

As a former UMC Pastor, I have seen the abandonment of the gospel in favor of any worldly issue in vain, desperate hopes to get people back. It won't happen with this . They don't need to re-think the gospel as if they could add something or change it. They need to find Pastors who believe the gospel and preach it. They need not to worry about literacy issues unless they just want to continue to be a civic organization. Here is what I would like to see them put on the sign
Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God, and I care not whether they be clergymen or laymen, they alone will shake the gates of Hell and set up the kingdom of Heaven upon Earth.
They deny the Diety of Christ and that Jesus died on the cross and was resurrected. Those are lies of Satan so as Jesus said " You are of your father the Devil as he was a liar from the beginning".
I am glad to see that church not showing fear of man to preach the Gospel. May God richly bless them and protect them.

Dr. Lyon taught me greek. He was a nice man, a scholar and wasn't prone to outlandish doctrines. He was a light of evangelism in a ghetto of love of scholarship.

To just asking
Jesus was the living word as he never debated seeking the truth as if he could also find it. he revealed the truth. This church is still seeking what they see as truth. They will never find it until they see Jesus.
No debate at all.

They better start to listen to the Word of God in order to mend their rift with God. Their rift is sin and the Blood of Jesus is the cure. Repent and believe the Gospel.
On our own we are little more than bits of stone and glass. Together we are the Body of Christ. Holy Bible: Mosaic is an invitation to experience Christ in His Word and in the responses of his people. Each week, as you reflect on guided Scripture readings aligned with the church seasons, you will receive a wealth of insight from historical and contemporary writings.
