Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. (JN 8:32)

believer.....thank you so much for the invaluable information. Some fathers in my church have lost their jobs recently and their families are facing real hardship. In the past year, 3 sole bread winners died prematurely. Even though there has never been any suicide cases in my church, I feel that the worsening financial situation of some families may be a catalyst for people to do desperate things.
I look after the youth fellowship group [60 members this year]in my church and even though there has never been any suicide cases, I am very keenly aware of the fact that youths are particularly at risk. I agree with you that I need to do a lot of praying. Please pray with me. Thank you again.

Thanks Mike..... I guess you're right, if someone really wants to take their own life, they'll find a way, no matter what. We do what we can with those close to us, pray for them, love them and keep them focussed on Jesus. And Mike...don't let anyone discourage you from advocating prayer as the Christian's way of dealing with loss and tradegy.

Polls are funny things. If someone were to ask me if Obama is my hero, I would say "yes" because there does not seem to be anyone else around whom I would consider a hero right now. But if I were asked to say who is No. 1 in my life, Jesus or Obama, hey my Jesus wins hands down! Let's give America the benefit of the doubt.

Sawn....Are you saying that the Church should not speak out on world issues because it is not perfect? The church, the Body of Christ, does not imagine for a moment that it is perfect; it is after all a community of people who know they are sinners and they need Christ as their Saviour. We sin all the time and so we are in constant repentance, as it were. The Church is the "light of the world" and the "salt for all mankind" [Matt.5; 13 - 14], so whether it is perfect or not, Jesus expects the Church to shed light on a darkening world. That's our commission.

I know from the current literature that suicide continues to be a major social issue in many countries. No one is immune to it, including church people.Does anyone posting on this site know the signs when someone is contemplating suicide? What do we need to be alert to?

When I was a high school teacher, one of my students, a 17-year old girl from a really good family committed suicide. I was devastated because I felt that I could have seen some sign that the girl was having problems and I could have helped. Then a few years later, my daughter's friend committed suicide and she was equally devastated. A few years ago, a much-loved nephew also took his own life. Yesterday we buried a 29-year old mum with a two-week old baby who took her own life quietly in the night while her husband and child slept. She goes to the same church as a work colleague.
Over the years, my younger daughter and I have started a small silent ministry using only smiles, kisses, hugs, praise, compliments and words of encouragement. We flash our most brilliant smiles to total strangers, hug acquaintances and friends all the time, compliment and praise women, girls, boys etc and say something nice to anyone who looks sad and discouraged.
My daughter and I like to think that over the years we have helped someone who was feeling down to feel better about themselves and their situation. You never really know what a tiny little gesture of kindness can do for someone who has lost all hope.

Reformation ....I have yet to see the movie and it may be a while before it gets to where I'm posting from.Perhaps you're right about the movie not being biblical, perhaps it's more just a parody of biblical characters, I don't know, but I will have a verdict by and by. Meanwhile, I am intrigued by your comment about "what people these days define as being Christian". What would be the biblical definition of a Christian?
The point is that this Christmas in June "tail" has got us all "ram-bling" a little!
Salute to the ewe-morists!Thanks for the chuckles. But seriously, Christmas in June? That's some yarn.

Just a comment for what it's worth......this is another horrible illustration of the great divide between Christianity and Islam today. Muslims in the West and in non-Muslim countries live such priviledged lives compared to Christians in Muslim countries: they can wear their Muslim attire anywhere, build their mosques, worship Allah freely and live a good life among Christians. They can evangelise at will and Christians do not ride around in motorbikes gunning them down. One has to ask, why are Muslims so afraid of Christianity and helpless Christian workers, and why do they think that their Allah needs to be protected? Are they afraid that if Muslims came face to face with the love of Jesus, they would see Allah for the false "god" that it is?
chicago24......Hell is for the devil and the fallen angels and for all those who have chosen not to believe in the name of the Son of God, Jesus Christ. God is absolutely just and we can trust him with the fate of those who have never heard the gospel. Most non-Christians have made their choice about whom they will worship, they too will be judged by a just God. There is no malevolence involved, simply justice.
Our prisons were built for those who break the law and we put convicts in prison because of that and not because of any feeling of malevolence on the part of lawmakers. Prison is where they belong because of the choices they have made. The purpose of hell is somewhat similar. Love you.

Lord, if it be thy will, let there be no more hurricanes in this hurricane season, to bring further suffering and loss to Haiti and its environs as well as to the southern areas of the USA. Have mercy on these peoples O Lord and turn their fears and sadness into joy. Send them the help they need Lord so the people who call you by your name will know that their help comes from you. Yours O lord is the power and the glory, Amen.

My heart leaps within me each time I read these verses from Psalm 139: 13 - 16.
(13)For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. (14) I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (15) My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, (16) your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
It's tremendously exhilarating to know that the great God who created heaven and earth also took the time to look at me in my mother's womb and to "knit me together" so that I am who I am today.
How it must grieve him to watch us nonchalantly killing babies in the womb and then having a field day doing endless debates about it while the abortion machine grinds on relentlessly.
I am blessed to live in a country where we believe that unborn babies are people and where no one will dare to suggest to legalise abortion or any of that madness.

40 million prospective Americans [aborted babies] have been murdered in cold blood on American soil in peace times and paid for with taxpayers' money. There's no way Americans can ever justify this level of state-sanctioned genocide. Satan is laughing all the way to hell! This madness must stop.

The Devil doesn't give up, does he? This is just another little skirmish. The war is already won....every knee shall bow, every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord!

We are "the church", certainly, and our modus operandi is to assemble together each week on Sunday [or Saturday] to worship. We can also just gather together in street corners, restaurants, airports, sports stadiums and anywhere else that suits our fancy. But assemble we must, and for me, nothing beats the church each week.
I put on my Sunday best, pick up my bible and hymn book and walk to church. There I meet all the people who are dear to me and whom I hope to spend eternity with in heaven!
Other times, we go visiting the poor, the unchurched, the sick in hospitals, the drug addicts and the prostitutes - but come Sunday, we're in church.
When a disaster strikes, we're there doing our bit distributing food, clothing, blankets, school books etc., but on Sunday we gather joyfully to worship the Lord together in a beautiful church.
My point is, the world has moved on since biblical times when there was no money to build churches where we could be together as God's family once a week.

Dear lord, I pray for Chen and Pastor Zhang and their two sons who are going through such a difficult time. Lord, keep them safe from all harm, especially Pastor Zhang who is in jail.Surround each of them with your angels Lord and cover them with the blood of Jesus. And in your wonderful mysterious way Lord, have Pastor released from jail before the Olympics. Grant this family the desires of their hearts today. I ask this in Jesus' name.Amen.

I thought to myself "What harm can two godly men do among 34 million Muslims?" Then I remember the apostle Paul doing irrevocable harm to Satan's dark kingdom while languishing in jail!
Lord Jesus, keep these two men safe from all harm, and continue to use them to advance your kingdom in Algeria. Amen.

What an amazing about-turn among Chinese officials. With God, everything is possible. He loves the Chinese and desires that they may be saved through his son Jesus Christ. We praise God that bibles may now be distributed to the Chinese in August. Let us pray earnestly for every individual and organisation that is planning to distribute bibles at the Olympics and elsewhere in China.
On our own we are little more than bits of stone and glass. Together we are the Body of Christ. Holy Bible: Mosaic is an invitation to experience Christ in His Word and in the responses of his people. Each week, as you reflect on guided Scripture readings aligned with the church seasons, you will receive a wealth of insight from historical and contemporary writings.
