In case anyone is confused, Danny was referring to a comment I made on another story about a gay library in Fort Lauderdale. I happen to live in South Florida, and follow local news closely, so I'm comfortable commenting on the Fort Lauderdale mayor. I don' t know you, Danny, so I don't know whether you are homophobic. People who dislike homosexuality because of religious beliefs but treat gay people with dignity and respect and don't try to take away their rights are not homophobic in my book. But people who are actively hostile toward gay people, constantly belittling them, spreading misinformation about them and opposing measures that would merely treat them as equal human beings under the law are homophobic in my opinion.

I'm amazed by all the Mormon bashing on this comment board. They oppose homosexuality and abortion just as much as Evangelicals. They also tend to vote for Republicans, just like Evangelicals. Shouldn't Evangelicals and Mormons be allies?

DannyPro, most dictionaries define homophobia as prejudice against gay people, which I think fits in the case of the mayor, if you take a look at his extensive history of intolerance of Fort Lauderdale's gay population.
Crossfire, there are a couple of things to remember. First if homosexuality were a choice, far more gays would choose to be straight, because it's human nature to choose the path that will be easier. It's much easier not to disappoint your parents and to be shunned by your church, friends and community. Second, if it's a choice, why are there so many people in the closet? These are people who are ashamed that they have homosexual tendencies and don' t want the world to know they're gay. If it's a choice, just choose to be straight. You can abstain from sex, but that doesn't change your orientation.

I'm confused about all this LDS stuff. Evangelicals and Mormons are both are politically conservative and strongest in red states. They both dislike homosexuality. They both are anti-abortion. Sounds like you're more alike than different. Shouldn't you guys be allies instead of swiping at each other?
"I am in the process of finding the right church!" stressed Glatze. Sounds like he's in the process of trying to find the right sexuality too, and I'm predicting heterosexuality and Mormonism will both be phases.

Now I realize this wouldn't fly in Charleston or Tulsa. But you gotta remember, despite a homophobic mayor, Fort Lauderdale is a gay mecca, ranking 4th in the country for most sex-sex households, according to the 2000 Census. And it's not hardcore porn, despite what this article states. These aren't Jeff Stryker videos. They're literary works that have some nudity in them. The 18 age limit is appropriate, as is a large gay communty having a public library that represents them.

If you take a look at the track record of longevity for people remaining ex-gay, it's not very good. I say give this guy a decade, and he'll be back in the Castro as the new editor of "Middle Aged Gay America."

There is zero scientific evidence gays can be cured. Why is only Christianity that cures gays? Why not ex-gay Jews, Muslims, Hindus? Sure you can not have sex and claim your straight, but professing your love for Jesus Christ does not change the way people are wired.
On our own we are little more than bits of stone and glass. Together we are the Body of Christ. Holy Bible: Mosaic is an invitation to experience Christ in His Word and in the responses of his people. Each week, as you reflect on guided Scripture readings aligned with the church seasons, you will receive a wealth of insight from historical and contemporary writings.
