  • Prosperity Gospel Treads Fine Line Between Blessing, Materialism, Say Theologians

I see Melinda Gates at Mass almost every Sunday. Bill would not have been so generous if it wasn't for his wife who tries to live the beatitudes to the best of her ability. I disagree with her on some issues of social justice, but I believe her heart is in the right place and I pray that God will continue to transform her conscience so she will continue to grow 100% in God's will.

    Well written Sola,
I agree with your logic and your premise is correct. Sola scriptura is really about Christ as our sole authority. As a former reformed minister and now Catholic, I can easilly see Christ had authority. Christ gave His authority to the apostles. These apostles gave their authority to their successors and so on. Protestants have no authority from God to interpret the bible, because they have no Apostolic authority. Simple.

In the Old Testament, the random individual did not interpret the Word of God but rather specific people like; Moses, Judges and Prophets. Specific, not random people. The New Testament is no different. Random people did not make doctrines or officially interpret God's Word, but rather Peter, with the Apostles and successor bishops. Christ founded one church and it is known as the Catholic Church upon the Apostolic faith in Christ. The Church predates the NT scriptures by many years. The Church on her authority by Christ gave us the New Testament. The New Testament Church was never sola scriptura, it couldn't be since the scriptures were not defined. Rather, there were three areas of authority; Scripture, Apostolic Tradition and Teaching authority of the Church(bind and loose, lead into all truth, he who hears you hears me, etc.). The first council of Jerusalem proves this point, by Peter revealing what he had received in a dream directly from God. He didn't use scripture to make this doctrine of no circumcision, rather he spoke on his authority given to him by Christ.

We Catholics and Orthodox, believe we are saved by Grace through faith working in love. Christ is the only way to salvation, not Mary or the Saints. There is only one mediator between man and God and that is Christ Jesus. Sola Christus we agree, Sola Gratia we agree, Sola Deo Gloria we agree. We do not agree on Sola scriptura because that is a modern invention not given by the apostles. We do not agree on Sola Fidei, because faith without works is dead. Faith alone will save no one. God's grace with faith will lead you to repentance(which is a work) and will lead you to live and cooperate with God's grace. If you have faith, but are not converted then you will not be saved since God will judge your heart. Faith without repentance is unbiblical, unsound, unholy, unchristian.less

As a former Reformed minister for many years who converted to the Catholic Church I can say that crossfire is correct. I would like to add a few things that may shed a little more light and context to the reasons the Catholic and Orthodox Churches are not at this conference.

    1. The groups that came to this convention are not true apostolic churches, do not have all the sacraments, do not have apostolic succession and hold to doctrines that are not True. Moreover, these groups have not maintained the offices of Bishop, Priest and Deacon as instituted by Christ and His apostles.
    2. These groups have no Christ given authority to make any doctrines on faith or morals since none of these groups were founded by the Apostles, but rather individual men some 1,500 or more years later.
    3. These groups, while professing faith in Jesus Christ, are fragmented on so many lines of doctrine that their is little unity.
    4. These groups accept each other's stances on faith and morals, despite the fact that they all may have opposing views.

If you are interested the Catholic Church and Orthodox churches are in the throws of comming back into full communion. These ancient churches of Christianity whom Christ founded as one, holy, Catholic and apostolic Church through the apostles. It could happen very soon, which would bring back the West and Eastern Apostolic Churches as one again. Moreover, over 6 million Anglicans and potentially more are coming home to the Catholic Church after 500 years of sepparation, while hundreds of thousands Lutherans, Methodists and Presbyterians are doing the same.

With full communion between the only two apostolic churches, this will account for almost 75% of all of Christianity and will make our combined effort of preaching the fullness of the Gospel even more effective since the Holy Spirit is leading us. Protestants will soon have to decide, do I serve the Lord's will in His Church with full unity, or will I reject the fullness of Truth for something less and just keep on Protesting for the sake of Protesting.

I protested for many years, then I learned the truth of the Catholic faith-its consistency-its history-its apostolic roots and finally converted. I never wanted to be Catholic frankly, but Truth won out my heart. Thank you Jesus!less

That was an example of not following Truth. You should go where Jesus guides you and for me almost 20 years later it was from being a Reformed Pastor to becoming Catholic.

You will come home too believer, when you honestly ask for God to guide you into to Truth. Make that prayer and we'll see if you don't return home to the Eucharist. Read Steve Ray's testimony http://www.catholic-soe.org/cd16.htmlless

God also showed up by the men in the mine requesting bibles and rosaries. One man who was married civilly, promised to get his marriage blessed in a church so God would be a part of his marriage. Many men gave their hearts to Christ in the mine, where many of them were cultural Catholics and now they are on fire for the Lord and want to pray more regularly and read his Word more often. All of the men felt a massive conversion.

Care to read about any of the Protestant Reformers, they will all attest to the Catholic Church being the Original. Maybe because your church isn't even Protestant and is some sect of a sect that started day before yesterday you don't know about Christian history.

Luther, Calvin, Knox, Smith, Wesley, Zwingli, Mennon, Henry the 8th would all concur that they left the Catholic Church is the original.less

The Catholic Church is the only Christian body to fight literally and politically against Islam(historical fact). Remember the Crusades, Lepanto and many other battles that Catholics fought to stem Islam running over Christianity.

It is our Protestant bretheren who make the body of Christ weak. As a former Reformed Minister who converted to the Catholic Faith Protestants have no unity, everyone is just a small denomination, fragmented and having no political clout. Protestants and evangelicals are not even present in the Middle East except the rare few you may meet who are Lutheran or Anglican. Only Catholics and Orthodox are fighting Muslims on a daily basis with no help from Protestants as they blindly send their money to Israel. Oh, and Catholics and Orthodox because of non-contraception have many children still to fight the non-contraceptive Muslims, while contraceptive Protestants cannot replace their own numbers and are of no help to Universal Church of Christ.

The Body of Christ needs total unity and all Christians must become one in faith and morals with the Catholic Church who with Christ protection and personal promise is the only thing that can help us defeat Islam. Anglicans are coming home in mass numbers, and soon the Orthodox and Catholics will heal the thousand year schism and unite as we did for the first thousand years. May all christians be of one faith, one heart, one mind, one baptism, one shepherd and of one Lord and Savior Jesus Christ so that all may know that Christ is the Savior of the World, the second person of the Trinity, Son of God and the ONLY WAY TO BE SAVED!less
