  • It Promises Far Too Little - The False Gospel of Prosperity Theology

Amen, Grace Man!!! Mr. Mohler seems to have no clue what "prosperity theology" is all about. It sounds like he's gotten most of his input second hand. The Bible screams with God's obsession to bless us, multiply us, make us fruitful, and do us good. The crowning truth is in Isaiah 53:5 where it says "the chasticement of our shalom was laid upon Him." What is "shalom" anyway"? According to the Hebrew it is "wholeness, fulness, soundness, completeness...nothing broken, nothing missing." This is what Jesus paid for with His Blood. He didn't just suffer and die so we could die and go to heaven. He suffered so we could be abundantly provided for in our mission of bringing this good news to the world.

The "orthodox mind" will, as Jesus said, strain a gnat and swallow a camel. These modern day Pharisees miss the huge point that a relationship with Jesus is not about "the checklist" but about honor, Love and authenticity...scary topics for the emotionally stunted. Yet it's funny that these same folks can live with the idea of Jesus being portrayed as a Lion by C.S. Lewis in CHRONICLES OF NARNIA but can't fathom God as a black woman. Hahahaha! Since when did God have a gender?!! Read the Bible you Galatians. Start with Gal. 3:28, "...there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." Love always win the day and, praise God, that's what's happening with THE SHACK. It truly is a God thing. All the resistance to it shows that it's right on track.

Well, such criticism is quite normal from the Pharisees when you pull their chain a bit. Pharisees tend to be emotionally stunted and unable to "feel" in a relationship. It's much more comfortable for them to hide behind their "orthodoxy" and throw stones at books and people who are asking them to open their hearts to Love, honor, respect and authenticity. THE SHACK is also thoroughly orthodox. It just scares the folks the Holy Spirit is drawing into grace, asking them to leave their performance and lawfulness behind. Many Pharisees are doing so, which is why the LORD has blessed the book with such phenomenal sales. Ironic, huh?!! <grin>

Humility is such a WONDERFUL trait!!! For most of my 54 years I've little ability to appreciate such a trait. I was too busy being a self-righteous Pharisee. But now I see a little of it's virtue, thanks to a divorce that provided shock treatment. So to hear John McCain speaking so humbly and candidly about his failures and weaknesses was sooo refreshing...almost unparalleled for a politician. How exciting because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Despite McCain's weaknesses, and mine, the LORD will turn things around for our country and give us another chance. Isn't that the glorious message of the Cross for all of us?!!

This ruling is so hypocritical. These same judges scream “separation of church and state” when we insist on “one woman/one man” as a standard for marriage, but when they impose their “religion of homosexuality and abortion” on us, we’re supposed to accept their demented religion? Why is their religion acceptable and the true religion of Jesus Christ isn’t?

Homosexuality is so simple to understand: It's the work of devils. Just cast the devils out. Devils can enter by my own sins and/or by the sins of my parents. Doesn't matter. Just cast them out. But those demonized by these homosexual devils don't like "reparative theology." They think homosexuality is permanent. That's because these devils don't want to lose their home.

Mr. Circumcision Proponent 2008, you've missed the whole point!!! Obviously scripture talks about "repenting." It literally means nothing more than "new thinking."

But you've turned it into such a gross form of works righteousness that you can't even appreciate the glaringly obvious, anointed, Cross-based writing of Rick Warren in PDL. Puuhhthetic!

As Paul said in Gal. 3:2, "Let me only ask you this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?"

By the way, Acts 5:31 makes it clear that repentance is something that God GIVES you. In reality, for all your soap-boxing about the "Gospel," yours is the different Gospel.

Mr. CP2008, guys like you are a dime a dozen in Galatia. Repentance (according to the Greek) is nothing more than new thinking which results in new actions. To believe the grace of the Gospel requires new thinking. But Galatians like you turn repentance into another form of "circumcision" in order to qualify for the grace of God. That's common heresy. There's a reason why Rick Warren's books have sold over 25 million and guys like you are reduced to piggybacking your self-righteous Gospel on his leadership article blog.

How sad that people attempt to label Rick Warren a heretic because his ministry style doesn't match theirs. Clearly Rick is orthodox and his PDL book is replete with references to the message of the Cross, which has brought thousands to Jesus. For starters, check out pages 58, 73, 78-79, 85, 97, and 112-113. One of the best quotes is on page 97 and it says, "The dearest thing to the heart of God is the death of His Son. The second dearest thing is when His children share that news with others." Precious!!! But wounded people, who've never been loved, have a difficult time receiving or recognizing Jesus' Love, so they lash out and attack, like noisy gongs and clanging cymbals. They need to be "right" and the more fruitful their victim the better it makes them look. No wonder the Pharisees attacked Jesus. Nothing has changed.

No, I didn't flag your email, Mr. Stop-the-Madness. Someone else must have found your email in poor taste. You base your labeling of Rick Warren on pretty flimsy evidence. Hurt and wounded people like yourself love "being right" but demonstrate little appreciation for the obvious and incredible fruitfulness of a dear brother like Rick. How many copies of your book have you sold? Can you imagine how many people have come to know Jesus as a result of Rick's 25 million PDL book and its message of the Cross? Why not, at bare minimum, adopt a Phil. 1:18?! And, by the way, have you forgotten that your sins tortured Jesus on the Cross? If you believed that, you'd find yourself much more gracious and forbearing.

Dear Mr. Stop-the-Madness: Though you may think you're a defender of the faith, it appears that your "rightest" tone merely means you haven't received much Love from Jesus. So how could you give to Rick Warren whatcha don't got yourself?!! While Rick's use of scripture is quite defensible, your demeaning of a fruitful and anointed man of God is not. I'd suggest you revisit Calvary and get a good grasp of the fact that Jesus has forgiven you billions, and you are only being asked to forgive others their thousands. However, most Pharisees think they've been forgiven thousands and are being asked to forgive billions. By the way, what kind of punishment do you think you should receive for torturing the Creator of the Universe on the Cross with your sins?

Well, isn't that terrible how Israel is treating these phuthetic Palestinians?!! After all, Israel has only had 4,000 rockets fired at them since they turned Gaza over to the enemy in their brilliant "land for peace" deal. And now big bad Israel is being mean to the folks in Gaza. Leave it to the Lutherans to denounce Israel for merely defending themselves. But the antiChrist spirit has been mocking Israel and our Blood Covenant God for years, so what else is new?! At some point when Israel gets a Prime Minister who's not a coward, like Olmert, Israel will quit acting like such wimps and just wipe out all their enemies. The Palestinians aren't an ethnic people anyway. They're just a bunch of squatters who were living on Israel's land, and now they think they deserve the place, even though they have no covenant for such with God Most High. Anyone who thinks that you can negotiate a peace settlement with these demonized Muslims is crazy. You can't negotiate with people whose prime goal is the anihilation of the Jews. Until they forsake the premise there will be no peace so Israel might as well get used to the idea that they're just going to have to go back into Gaza and take it over. They were getting rocket attacks when they still occupied the land.

Obviously Dr. Gregory doesn't have a clue about what MLK really believed about the scriptures and social issues. There is ample evidence to believe that he would have honored scriptures and decried abortion, homosexuality, gay marriages, along with racial discrimination and compassion for the poor...just like Mike Huckabee.

All you have to do is understand the defintion of PEACE ("shalom" or "irene") to understand whether the Bible promises prosperity or not. Isaiah 53:5 says, "The chasticement of our PEACE was laid upon Him." PEACE on earth, God's favor to you!!!
