  • McCain, Obama Clash over Abortion Issue

Professor Alexander DeConde summarizes the actual research on this by saying,“Most studies show that guns in private hands, regardless of how carried, have not stopped crime with any significance capable of measurement. Attempts to use a gun against an armed assailant usually have been more deadly for the victim than for the attacker.” So you are just perpetuating another myth. This is not a smokescreen it is just giving a balanced view on different aspects of preserving life. On the question of whether Barack Obama is smart - simply making a statement does not make that statement true. Whether you agree with his positions or not, you have to admit that he graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, and was a professor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago. This is very strong evidence that he is alot smarter than you or I.

While abortion is an important issue, there are other issues related to preserving life which must be considered in evaluating a candidate. Barack Obama is a much stronger advocate of gun control than McCain/Palin who support the NRA. The ready access to handguns is partly responsible for the deaths of thousands of adults and young people each year. Those who refuse to support strong, comprehensive federal handgun control laws are contributing to ending thousands of lives as much as those who do not oppose abortion. We must put the lives of thousands of Americans ahead of selfish pleasure of gun owning or the false idea that private gun toting citizens are going to effectively prevent crime.

I am surprised and disappointed that the Christian Post would print such a slanderous piece. The author equates an American presidential candidate to a snake oil salesman, to Fidel Castro, and to Karl Marx. This kind of writing has no place in a respectable news publication.

  • Global Warming 'Unequivocal,' Landmark Report Claims

A 2003 survey of climatologists found that 82% agreed with the statement, "We can say for certain that global warming is a process already underway." Only 2.6% strongly disagree.
ExxonMobil has funneled nearly $16 million between 1998 and 2005 to a network of 43 advocacy organizations that seek to confuse the public on global warming science.
    See the report:
Smoke, Mirrors & Hot Air: How ExxonMobil Uses Big Tobacco's Tactics to "Manufacture Uncertainty" on Climate Change which details how the oil company, like the tobacco industry in previous decades, has raised doubts about even the most indisputable scientific evidence and
funded an array of front organizations to create the appearance of a broad platform for a tight-knit group of vocal climate change contrarians who misrepresent peer-reviewed scientific findings. There is certainly debate and diagreement on the proportion of various factors causing global warming and what the ultimate global results will be, but it is clear that global warming is taking place.

It is clear to most people who have taken the time to consider the evidence that Global Warming is taking place and will have major future impacts on the planet and particularly on
the most vulnerable populations. As Christians we are not only called to be good stewards of
God's creation, but also to care for the poor. It is the poor who will be least able to deal with the effects of Global Warming. One of the problems with news coverage is that it tends to give too much attention and space to people like John Coleman and the tiny minority who dismiss what the overwhelming majority of scientists are saying about the reality of climate change. This is not an issue that should be relegated to partisan politics. All Christians should support reasonable efforts to reduce Global Warming (and overlook the ridicule of people like zenodaddy as unhelpful)
