WHEW! I'M SO GLAD SHE CLARIFIED THAT...OH WAIT...SHE'S STILL SPEAKING HERESY!
Who in the world ordains these people???
SHE SAYS:
"If salvation is understood only as 'getting right with God' without considering 'getting right with (all) our neighbors,' then we've got a heresy (an unorthodox belief) on our hands."
HUH??? What Bible is this woman reading? What seminary did she attend?
Actually, salvation by grace through faith IS salvation! Yes, we are commanded to love our neighbors, but the Bible never once mentions that our salvation depends on that.
She is imposing a kind of "works" to salvation! Salvation is NOT of works...LEST ANY MAN SHOULD BOAST. (Ephesians 2:9-10)
Her claim that "getting right with God" is heresy is absolutely a baseless and imagined argument.
SHE SAYS:
"Salvation cannot be complete, in an eternal and eschatological sense, until the whole of creation is restored to right relationship..."
Again, another unfounded, un-Christian, imagined idea. Nowhere is this idea ever espoused in scripture. NO WHERE!
The only thing I can even imagine she may be talking about is that when Adam and Eve sinned, all of creation fell, and sin was brought into the world. Jesus then had to save mankind from sin by His sacrifice on the cross thus reconciling us back to God, or giving us a "bridge" back to communion with God, which was lost when Adam & Eve sinned.
1Co 15:21-22 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
Man, this is just another example of how convoluted the Episcopalian denomination has become. When Ichabod is written over the doors of a church, lunacy soon follows. They are no longer motivated by the Holy Spirit but by the fallen, fleshly ambitions of their members.
All that said, she is right in that salvation isn't measured by a formula or a recited prayer, per se. "The sinners prayer" is only a "go-by", it isn't the formula. Saying a prayer doesn't make us saved; repenting (turning away from sin) and trusting (turning one's life over) in Jesus Christ does.

By the way, those aren't my stats, but they are accurate as far as I know. I absolutely agree with you though that those numbers are probably wrong, of course, based on the reasons you rightly outlined in your post.
However, I think what the Newsweek author was trying to suggest was that "all paths" somehow lead to God and that you can "smorgasbord" your religious beliefs together any way you like and you'll still find heaven. This is patently ridiculous.
Religions are so different in their beliefs and doctrines, to suggest they all lead to the same place, or at the very least can be mixed and matched, shows ignorance on her part.
By the way, I think your number of true American Christians (20%) is probably a bit high too. :)+)

His authority transcends everything else; His ability to bind up the broken-hearted and set captives free transcends everything else; His power over the demonic and oppressive spirit of homosexuality and all sexual bondage transcends everything else.

If you're in search of a church that is expository in nature and Biblically focused, the Baptists hold very closely to the Word. That's what they're known for.
I am NOT Baptist, but if I knew of someone who was wanting to grow in the Word, I would not think twice about suggesting they become a part of a Baptist church body. Bible study and teaching is paramount there.
I noticed you mentioned you had an anti-gay pastor. Frankly, the Baptists, because they keep to the Word, do not accept or condone homosexuality no more than they accept or condone fornication or adultery or any form of promiscuity. All of these are sin according to the Word.
If you're wanting to grow in Christ, non-denominational churches aren't always the best bet. Sometimes they're "non-denominational" for a reason, and sometimes it's not for the right reasons. (Though this is NOT by any means a rule of course, just my opinion).
My suggestion is to pray about it first. Ask God to lead you where you should go. Then visit several churches.
When you settle on one, interview the pastor as to what that particular church body believes. Be kind and considerate, but ask questions concerning doctrine and faith and Christian living. Some churches even have new believers classes or Pizza with the Pastor, so you can meet the Pastor and his staff. In a Godly church, questions are always welcomed if done with respect.
If you allow the Holy Spirit to lead you, He will place you where you need to be.less

Hmmm...well, only one faith seems to keep getting it consistently right:
1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils..."
People will depart from the faith because they never had any to begin with. They will be lured away; seduced by the shiny trinkets of satan's promises. But he is nothing but a roaring lion seeking who he may devour. And he is devouring many today.
But do all paths lead to God? HARDLY!
In a survey of the world's religions, Christianity is still the dominant one, with 2.1 billion believers (33% of the world's population). Islam is next with 1.3 billion (21%), followed by Hinduism (900 million, 14%), Sikhism (23 million, 0.36%), Judaism, Bahaism, Buddhism, etc. Interestingly, atheists number about 1.1 billion (16%). However, the numbers for Islam are inflated a bit, considering that it's essentially forced upon people in countries like Iran or Malaysia.
• Pantheists believe that all life is unity. In particular, they believe that the spirit (atman) is the nonmaterial, intangible self connecting with the concrete world. The concept of reincarnation is also different between Hinduism and Buddhism. Hindus believe in moksha, where you reappear in a new form. Buddhists believe in nirvana, where your moral effect is carried over in a karmic cycle. Each birth is a rebirth, and each birth is a result of karma. The human condition can thus be summarized as misery and opportunity. And, the way to obtain bliss (atman siddhi) is through knowledge, works, and devotion.
Can you get to heaven, according to Christian Orthodoxy, by works? Ephesians 2:9-10 is a hint.
• Hinduism started around 2500 BC. Buddhism started around 500 BC as a response to Hinduism. In general, lower caste Hindus fled to Buddhism because the latter had no vegas and no caste system, thus they felt more valued.
• The goal of Hinduism is unity with an impersonal absolute. The goal of Christianity is communion with the divine, or a relationship with God, a personal being.
As you can see, all paths DO NOT lead to God, nor do they hope to. Add to this scenario the other 21 or so major religions and you can see how ridiculous an idea it is to suggest that all paths lead to God.less

1 Corinthians 13 - the motivation for the believer and his work - Love.
God IS love.
And if you claim to know Him, and give up your body to be martyred but have not love...you gain nothing. He is merciful because He is love. Unmerciful people don't have love.
1 John 4:10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
1 John 4:19 We love because he first loved us.
...and yes, the fact that God died on a cross for my sin and your sin is the ultimate expression of love. No greater love has any man than this; that he lay down his life for his friends.
1 Timothy 1:5 The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
Love should motivate everything we do, if what we do is in keeping with the heart and Spirit of God. Whenever men remove the love of God from the Gospel, it is just as bad as those who present a false gospel and misrepresent Christ.
God is just; His love requires justice. But He is patient, wanting "that NONE should perish but that ALL should come to a knowledge of the Truth."

(the documentary: "Expelled" is an expose' to that fact) And many Creationists who have submitted legitimate scientific papers, only to have them rejected, because they don't fit the evolutionary paradigm can attest to this all too well.
There's something you need to understand about science:
There is "Operational Science" and there is "Origins Science".
Operational (Observational) Science is a systematic approach to understanding that uses OBSERVABLE, testable, REPEATABLE, and falsifiable experimentation to understand how nature commonly behaves.
Operational science is the type of science that allows us to understand how DNA codes for proteins in cells. It is the type of science that has allowed us to cure and treat diseases, put a man on the moon, build satellites and telescopes, and make products that are useful to humans.
Historical (Origins) Science involves interpreting evidence from past events based on a PRESUPPOSED philosophical point of view.
Evolution and Creationism both fall into this second category.
The past is not directly OBSERVABLE, TESTABLE, REPEATABLE, or falsifiable; so interpretations of past events present greater challenges than interpretations involving operational science. Neither creation nor evolution is directly observable, testable, repeatable, or falsifiable. Each is based on certain philosophical assumptions about how the earth began.
Naturalistic evolution assumes that there was no God, and biblical creation assumes that there was a God who created everything in the universe. Starting from two opposite presuppositions and looking at THE SAME EVIDENCE, the EXPLANATIONS of the history of the universe are very different. The argument is not over the EVIDENCE; THE EVIDENCE IS THE SAME, it is over the way the evidence should be INTERPRETED.less

Cheisa,
Irrelevant? The meaning of "day" IS THE WHOLE ARGUMENT!
If Genesis 1 can't be trusted then neither can John 1!
Hugh Ross is known in Christian circles for compromising secular ideas, such as the big bang, billions of years, etc., with the Bible and reinterpreting the clear language of Genesis. He is one of the leading compromisers in the church today undermining the authority of Scripture.
The Bible clearly teaches that God created in six literal, 24-hour days a few thousand years ago. The Hebrew word for day in Genesis 1 is yom. In the vast majority of its uses in the Old Testament it means a literal day; and where it doesn’t, the context makes this clear.
First, yom is defined the first time it is used in the Bible (Genesis 1:4–5) in its two literal senses: the light portion of the light/dark cycle and the whole light/dark cycle. Second, yom is used with “evening” and “morning.” Everywhere these two words are used in the Old Testament, either together or separately and with or without yom in the context, they always mean a literal evening or morning of a literal day. Third, yom is modified with a number: one day, second day, third day, etc., which everywhere else in the Old Testament indicates literal days. Fourth, yom is defined literally in Genesis 1:14 in relation to the heavenly bodies.
Jesus consistently treated the miracle accounts of the Old Testament as straightforward, truthful, historical accounts including creation. He continually affirmed the authority of Scripture over men’s ideas and traditions (Matthew 15:1–9). In Mark 10:6 we have the clearest (but not the only) statement showing that Jesus was a young-earth creationist. He teaches that Adam and Eve were made at the “beginning of creation,” not billions of years after the beginning, as would be the case if the universe were really billions of years old. The idea of millions of years did not come from the scientific facts. This idea of long ages was developed by deistic and atheistic geologists in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. These men used antibiblical philosophical and religious assumptions to interpret the geological observations in a way that plainly contradicted the biblical account of creation, the Flood, and the age of the earth. Most church leaders and scholars quickly compromised using the gap theory, day-age view, local flood view, etc. to try to fit “deep time” into the Bible. But they did not understand the geological arguments, and they did not defend their views by careful Bible study. The “deep time” idea flows out of naturalistic assumptions, not scientific observations.
God’s Word is the final authority on all matters about which it speaks—not just the moral and spiritual matters, but also its teachings of history, archaeology, and science.
What is at stake here is the authority of Scripture, the character of God, the doctrine of death, and the very foundation of the gospel. If the early chapters of Genesis are not true literal history, then faith in the rest of the Bible is undermined, including its teaching about salvation and morality.less

God is the standard for what is "right" and what is "wrong" He is the fulcrum upon which all of reality balances. Remove that fulcrum and what you have is an unbalanced tilt toward chaos. Family becomes dysfunctional, marriage becomes unsustainable, life is undefinable, person hood is untenable, hope is unfathomable, and our future becomes unbearable, because then man and governments become the definers of "right" and "wrong".
But which government is qualified to do such a thing? Lenin's? Hitler's? Obama's? Bush's? Chavez's?
What government or government leader is morally qualified to dictate pure, unbiased, rulership?
"For ALL have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God."
"We all like sheep have gone astray, each one to his own way, and God has laid upon Him (Jesus) the iniquity of us all."
"No one is righteous, no not one."
"while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
If mankind could save himself and define his own parameters, then Jesus would never have had to come to die on a cross. If man could save himself by raising up the "right" leader - the right government - then Jesus would never have had to come.

The overarching answer to your question is: Jesus and His Father's Word, the Bible.
Jesus, is the "right" person. He is the example and He is the judge of what is "right". He spoke of His Father and He being "one". They were inseparable. That means that all that was spoken by His Father in the Old Testament is still applicable to the New. When God defined marriage in the Old Testament, Jesus reaffirmed it in the New.

Another example of how simple and obvious biological and physiological facts escape the imbecilic of this generation. The lesbian has no biological connection to the child other than the fact that she entered into a counterfeit marriage with the real mom.
This is what is happening as the godless of our generation remove the distinct lines that have defined "family" for thousands of years.
They are incapable any longer of defining:
1) what is human? (abortion)
2) what is a man/woman? (pregnant "man" - a woman pretending to be a pregnant man)
3) what is a family? (this case and others like it)
4) what is ethical? (euthanasia)
5) What is marriage? (counterfeit marriages)
When the godly parameters were removed as a basis for Western civilization, we have come to a point where no one can define "new" parameters sufficient enough to carry us forward. So, men are doing what is right in their own eyes. Each one redefines his/her own moral replacement for God as well as God's moral law. What emerges is confusion then disillusion and ultimately delusion.

We do not need and cannot expect a full 'appreciation' or 'understanding' of homosexuality from the average American. You can forget about trying to persuade the masses that homosexuality is a good thing. But if only you can get them to think that it is just another thing...then your battle for legal and social rights is virtually won" (25).
* Part of the homosexual agenda is to get the public to affirm their filthy lifestyle, as one homosexual admitted in the October 1987 homosexual rally on Washington: "We are no longer seeking just a right to privacy and a protection from wrong.
