While the statistic on the desire for purity is encouraging, the ones that catch my attention- and break my heart- are these ones:
• 59 percent said the Bible has little/no influence on their thoughts and actions
• 62 percent believe truth is relative
• 57 percent believe being good people and doing good deeds will get you into heaven
2/3 of the generation directly beneath mine believe truth is relative, feel that the Bible has little influence on their lives, and- most significantly- don't take sin seriously. This is a devastating statistic, though I would be curious as to whether such a statistic has ever been found before and what kind of trend this reflects.
On the other hand, when we compare this with the findings of George Barna, I guess this isn't that bad. After all, 43% of teens to state that they believe one cannot earn their way to heaven. Now, I'm sure that not all of them are Born-Again Christians (as Barna would call them,) but I still cannot help but notice that this is a higher amount than the population as a whole (of which under 40% believe that statement- according to barna.org).
