$10,000 Found By 10-Year-Old; Cash Handed In to Police

$10,000 has been found by a 10 year old boy inside a Kansas hotel room.

The incident took place at the Hilton Airport Hotel on Saturday, when Tyler Schaefer discovered the huge amount of cash in one of the hotel rooms.

The boy's father, Cody Schaefer, has described that the bills were stacked neatly in one of the room drawers when his son discovered them.

Schaefer explained that his son is quite the explorer and tends to be "very observant" about his surroundings, however, the family never expected him to come across such a find.

The father reported that his son suddenly started shouting that he had found some money. However, Schaefer believed that he might have found a $10 or $20 bill, and certainly not $10,000.

When Schaefer caught a glimpse of the huge amount of cash he was understandably stunned and admitted that he was not quite sure what to do at first.

The boy has said, "I didn't know if it was real. I showed it to my dad and he said it was real."

The family decided that it was not theirs, and was too large a sum to simply say it would be fine for the boy to keep, so they turned the $10,000 in to the Kansas City Police Department.

Officials were equally stunned by the find, but have since confirmed that no one has yet come forward to report the cash missing. Sergeant Randy Francis has admitted that the situation does seem suspicious.

Police have confirmed that if the money goes unclaimed for a period of seven months then the huge sum could indeed be returned back to the 10 year old boy and his family.

However, Schaefer is not holding out much hope of that happening.

"We didn't have the money when we got there, so it doesn't change much," he said.

Although he admitted that if the money were handed over to them then it would be put straight into a college fund for his son.
