16-Pound Baby Boy Sets California Record

A 16-pound baby boy has just stolen the record for California's biggest baby. Even though he is a huge blessing to his family, they are now working extra hard to make sure that he is happy and healthy and having all of his larger-than-life needs met.

Sosefina Tagalu gave birth to Sammisano Joshua Talai Otuhiva in August; the healthy baby boy weighed an astonishing 16 pounds, 1.7 ounces.

"Everyone was guessing before we weighed him," Tagalu told the Huffington Post. "The nurses were guessing 10 or 11 pounds and the doctor guessed 14. The doctor said he might have weighed 18 pounds if he had arrived on the due date."

Tagalu decided to come forward with news of Sammisano's hefty birth after another baby born last month was declared the state's largest, weighing in at 15 pounds, 2 ounces.

"My friends and family told me I needed to set the record straight," Tagalu told the San Francisco Chronicle, where you can see photos of the larger-than-life Sammisano. "They said you have an amazing gift that nobody else has."

It's not the first time Tagalu has delivered a big baby. Sammisano's brothers weighed a respective 12 pounds, 4 ounces and 11 pounds, 1 ounce at the time of their births. Even though all the babies were healthy, their bigger weight came with unique challenges for their mother, including a larger appetite.

"I feed him a bowl of cereal and when it's finished he looks at me like, 'Mom, where's the rest?'" Tangalu said. She waits 45 minutes before feeding him again but said that he's nearly insatiable. And she had to return to work early in order to afford his diapers, clothes, and food that she was unprepared for, with his size.

"Not a single one [fit]," she said of the clothes and diapers she had ready for Sammisano. "Not the three months, not the six months – I had to start him in 12 months clothing the day he was born. I had to return to work three weeks early to cover the extra cost of food and diapers. He truly is amazing. Just amazing."
