2018 Ford Fiesta ST Release Date, Specs News: High-Performance Supermini Equipped With New Three-Cylinder Powertrain

The 2018 Ford Fiesta ST has been introduced ahead of its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show next week. Unlike its predecessor, the next-generation high-performance supermini will be powered by a new 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder EcoBoost engine that is more powerful and efficient.

The new powertrain replaces the previous model's 1.6-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine. Despite losing one cylinder, the 2018 Fiesta ST delivers comparable performance with 197 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque. It can go from 0 to 62 miles per hour (mph) in 6.7 seconds.

According to the automaker, the 2018 Fiesta ST is the first Ford Performance model to use a three-cylinder engine. This particular architecture includes a turbocharger with an optimized turbine design that boosts pressure faster and minimizes lag. The overall result is a more responsive vehicle.

Also, the third-generation Fiesta ST comes with three Drive Modes: Normal, Sport and Track. With these, the high-performance supermini will be able to adjust its engine, steering, stability and exhaust sound depending on the road conditions. This translates to a more enhanced and fun-to-drive experience.

Despite being a high-performance vehicle, the 2018 Fiesta ST's new engine comes with cylinder deactivation for increased fuel efficiency. In this system, fuel delivery and valve operation for one cylinder is automatically stopped when the supermini is not expected to perform in full capacity. However, the cylinder can be re-engaged in just 14 milliseconds.

Another notable addition for the new-generation Fiesta ST is Electronic Sound Enhancement (ESE) technology that delivers a more satisfying exhaust sound.

The 2018 Fiesta ST features a bold exterior design language that is highlighted by a race car-inspired mesh grille and exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels. Prospective customers will be able to personalize their vehicles with distinct styling packs and different trims for the gear level, steering wheel, door pulls and dashboard. Inside, the supermini comes standard with Recaro seats and a flat-bottomed steering wheel.

In terms of technologies, the new Fiesta ST is equipped with the newest SYNC 3 infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen display and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. There is also a B&O Play premium audio system.

The 2018 Ford Fiesta ST will arrive in Europe in early 2018. It will be offered in a three-door and a five-door bodystyle.
