'24' is 'Instutionally Desired' to Be Made Into Feature Film

The critically acclaimed television show “24” is set to become a movie, a former producer of the show says. “Conversations are definitely happening,” said Howard Gordon, former show runner, but he “will not be heartbroken” if a movie does not happen.

The television drama series on Fox ended more than a year ago, but rumors of Kiefer Sutherland starring in a big-screen continuation of “24” remain rampant.

During the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, Gordon told the Hollywood Reporter that, “There’s an institutional desire to do it,” referring to making the “24” franchise into a movie. “I know Kiefer wants to do it, we all want to do it. It’s just about finding the right script and not just doing it to do it.”

Gordon commented that creating the dramatic thriller’s final episodes was an uphill battle, and that he is proud of the work he has done. He shared his concern about what a feature would entail, “It was very hard to get it to the finish line with some kind of grace in closure. Why mess it up? But if you find the right story…”

In the series, Kiefer Sutherland plays Jack Bauer, a Counter Terrorist Unit agent. Each “24” episode uses real time narration, and covers 24 hours in the life of the character.

The show ran for eight seasons and over 192 episodes from 2001-2010. Also, “24: Redemption” was a movie made for television, and was broadcast between seasons six and seven.

“24” won Best Drama Series at the 2003 Golden Globe Awards and an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series in 2006. It is the longest-running espionage-themed television show ever, beating both “Mission: Impossible” and “The Avengers.”

“I miss the character (Bauer) terribly and I know Kiefer does, too,” Gordon said. He added that discussions about a “24” movie so far involve the plot taking place abroad, and that unlike traditional episodes, the movie would probably exceed 24 hours.

Gordon is currently promoting Showtime’s series “Homeland.”
