$270K Corvette Sold at Auction, Proceeds Going to Habitat for Humanity

The CEO of General Motors sold his 1958 Chevrolet Corvette at an auction for $270,000 with the proceeds all going to charity.

Dan Akerson, the car maker's chairman and chief executive, was at the Detroit auto show on Friday when he presented a check to Habitat for Humanity. The money will be used to fund the rehabilitation of a neighborhood close to GM's headquarters. Habitat for Humanity will use the money to help the Morningside Commons, which is located to the east of GM's downtown Detroit headquarters.

The auction was held in Scottsdale, Ariz., during the Barrett-Jackson Auction and was broadcast at the Detroit auto show. Akerson's 1958 hardtop model is considered rare, given that only 9,100 Corvettes were built for that model year.

The new 2014 Corvette Stingray was also unveiled during Detroit's North American International Auto Show, with Corvette enthusiasts praising the new model.

The seventh-generation 2014 Chevrolet Corvette has managed to maintain a lot of its traditional style and looks, with only minimal changes being made to its design.

Some of the changes were the round taillights have been dropped and the hood is vented and finned. However, the style is still undoubtedly faithful to the last generation C6 Corvette, but at the same time completely refreshed and different.

The build-quality of the materials in the car are also vastly improved from the previous model, with the C7 featuring leather-wrapped surfaces as well as high quality plastics throughout.

The driver's view has also been upgraded and boasts an advanced instrument cluster featuring various improvements, leaving Corvette lovers in no doubt that this is a new generation model taking a big step into the modern era.

This Corvette Stingray launch model also boasts a 6.2 liter LT1 v-8 engine, which has 450 horsepower and 450-foot pounds of torque. The new C7 can also go from zero to 60 in less than four seconds. The new model is also the most fuel efficient Corvette ever made, getting better than 26 mpg.
