In most states, federal taxes normally take out 28 percent of lottery winnings. However, the tax rate can rise depending on the prize money. Thus, lottery winnings could be subject to federal taxes as high as 39.6 percent (the highest tax bracket) as well as a state tax, which in the end combined could total up to even 50 percent of the prize money.
