Violence in Karachi Kills 39

Authorities say at least 39 people have been killed in political and ethnic charged fights in Karachi, Pakistan's southern port city.

The Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) leader Raza Haroon on Thursday threatened a city-wide strike, saying provincial lawmakers would rally on Friday in protest of the government's lack of action to put an end to the violence.

Clashes between rival political groups in Sindh province, MQM and the Awami National Party (ANP) are blamed by police to be the cause of the ethnic and political violence that has broken out in Karachi within the last three days.

More police and paramilitary personnel have been sent to stop the latest outbreaks.

Haroon believes supporters of MQM were being specifically targeted due to the party quitting the coalition. Karachi is home to some 15 million people. The city has also seen violence erupt between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims and militant attacks.
