Two men's teams who had expected to qualify for this final missed out on Thursday; Jamaica and Kenya. The two sides missed out following injury on behalf of the Jamaicans and a collision for the Kenyans.
The 4x400M relay is always one of the most watched track and field events at the Olympic Games; the length of the race gives time for some dramatic events to take place on a scale not possible in the less-than-10 second 100 meter dash.
The qualifications for the final of the 4x400M has already provided a huge amount of drama with the collisions and injuries, and the baton passing also usually brings up further drama.
Host nation Great Britain will be competing ensuring there will be an electric crowd of 80,000 screaming the athletes on throughout the final. They performed admirably in their qualification and produced an impressive run when they ran in the first of the two qualifying heats. The Bahamas will also be one of the favorites to take gold in the final, and boast a strong line up with arguably the closest side to Team USA.
One of the most talked about athletes in the Games will also be running; Oscar Pistorius. It initially looked like heart break for the double-amputee runner when he was denied the chance to run when his colleague was upended before handing the baton over to him. However, following a review the South African side were reinstated to the final when it was found that the kenyans had unfairly impeded the South African runner.
However, without a doubt the Americans, seeking an eighth successive gold in the race, will start favorites in the race.
