5 Bible Verses to Help Become a Better Spouse

Marriage isn't a walk in the park. It is a two-way street where both spouses give and take of each other. Unless one is ready to give up, both of them will have to work as a team to protect their union from forces that could destroy it.

Below are five verses to help you out:

"He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD." (Proverbs 18:22)

This verse strikes at the concept of cohabitation that is widely practiced today. Many people forego the process of holy matrimony and opt to "play house" to provide themselves an easy way out when they grow tired of each other. Married Christian men should take this verse to heart by considering themselves blessed for having obtained a favor from God.

"For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother, and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." (Ephesians 5:31)

This is a reminder to young people about the sacredness of this God-established institution. It is not something to be rushed into just because they felt like doing it. Marriage is a lifetime commitment which entails preparation in every aspect of life: physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually and financially.

"And be subject to one another in the fear of Christ." (Ephesians 5:21)

Most men love to refer to verses instructing wives to be submissive to their husbands. But this passage teaches that man and wife are co-equals. Verse 28 further instructs that husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

"House and wealth are an inheritance from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the LORD." (Proverbs 19:14)

One of the underreported problems in media is the debt trap of thousands of American families. Credit cards and low-interest loans have lured families into buying things they don't need, leaving nothing for savings. This vicious system inflated a bubble that could potentially ruin the economy.

"And the contentions of a wife are a constant dripping." (Proverbs 19:13)

The dictionary defines the word "contentious" as being quarrelsome. Here, we see that even the Scriptures doesn't approve of nagging. What the Bible favors are words of wisdom and teaching of kindness coming out of a woman's mouth (Proverbs 31:26).
