5 Verses to Help You Sleep Well

Sleep deprivation is one of the health problems confronting adults. Researchers cite a variety of causes, from simple distractions to stress and other health-related complications. Whatever the reason may be, the body needs to be well-rested and recharged for the next day's tasks.

Sleep is essential as it refreshes the brain, repairs damaged cells and releases important hormones to the body. Medical experts say the length of sleep needed varies according to age. Children need up to 10 hours of sleep while eight hours will do for adults. For those above 65 years old, the recommended duration is six hours.

Lack of sleep can lead to various complications depending on the how short the rest is. This can cause simple headaches, dizziness and moodiness. The more serious consequences are depression, memory problems, cognitive dysfunction which could lead to proneness to accidents, high blood pressure and eventually heart disease.

Here are five tips to get you that good night sleep.

Follow your body clock

Most people who can't sleep are those who, for one reason or another, didn't go to bed immediately when they felt drowsy. By the time they get ready to hit the sack, sleepiness has already gone and they're left staring at the ceiling in the dark.

"I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me." (Psalm 3:5)

Get rid of distractions

One of the problems of some people nowadays is their addiction to technology like social media and video games. They spend the night away chatting and playing until they realize they have a couple of hours left to sleep.

"It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep." (Psalm 127:2)

Relax

As stated earlier, stress is one of the reasons why sleep becomes elusive. Those who suffer from stress toss around in bed even if they're not thinking of work. Make your bedroom conducive to rest to help you relax. Recreate the ambiance of a spa by putting on light music and scented candles.

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)

Stop worrying

This is the problem of busy people who always want to be on top of things. The only remedy for this is to stop being a control freak.

"Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." (Matthew 6:34)

Pray

The most productive thing to do if sleep seems impossible is to talk to God. Pray that He takes away your worries and burdens. Pray for peace of mind and good health. Pray for rest so you can serve more effectively.

"And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts." (Colossians 3:15)
