5,000 Pastors Unite in Voice to Protect Poor

A letter signed by almost 5,000 pastors urging President Obama and legislators not to cut funds that offer services to the poor was printed in Politico Wednesday.

The letter was written by Sojourners, a DC-based national network of Christians focused on social justice issues.

“Listen to your pastors” heads the letter that addresses recent cuts to Medicare and Medicaid as well as the potential delays to Social Security payments, and reiterates “the moral measure of the debate it how the most poor and vulnerable fare.”

During federal budget debates that began earlier this year, the Sojourners began the “Circle of Protection”; an effort to keep budget cuts from affecting social services. The letter is a continuation of this movement, with signatures of pastors of several church denominations from 50 states.

“As Christian leaders, we are committed to fiscal responsibility and shared sacrifice. We want to support you in reducing the deficit. There is more need today than churches can meet themselves,” the letter pleads.
