A 9-year-old has been killed by an intruder, who broke into the girl's family home in California on Saturday, sparking a huge manhunt in Valley Springs for the murderer.
Authorities have said that the suspect is being considered armed and extremely dangerous and have asked that local residents stay indoors and lock their doors while the manhunt goes on.
A spokesperson for the Calaveras County Sheriff's office has announced, "We're doing a house to house search and in some cases we're searching extensively into attics and storage sheds. It's a difficult area to search. It's rural, it's remote."
The killing took place during the day, at about noon time on Saturday. The family residence is located in a rural community in Northern California.
Investigators have not yet released any detailed information about the 9 year old that was killed, but have described that the girl's older 12 year old brother has said he encountered the intruder inside the home. However, the suspect fled the scene after seeing him. The two young children were home alone at the time.
After the encounter the boy went to check on his sister but says that he found her stabbed.
The boy called his parents and reported what had happened, and authorities were quickly called. The little girl was taken to a local hospital, but later died from her stab wounds.
The boy has described the suspect as a six-foot white or Latino man with long grey hair. He was wearing blue pants and a black long-sleeve shirt at the on the break in.
The manhunt for the suspect took place throughout Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, but as of yet no one has been found.
One neighbor has told reporters: "That's just terrible, what can I say about it it's a tragedy."
Some people, who describe themselves as locals in the area, have taken to social media sites to say they had seen a prowler in the area on Saturday. However, investigators have not verified any of those sightings and reports to media at this time.
