$99 HP TouchPad: WebOS 3.0.4 Update Available

Despite HP's WebOS and corresponding tablet computer, the TouchPad being discontinued, the company is continuing to provide updates for the platform.

HP announced the release of an update to WebOS 3.0.4 on Tuesday.

The update provides a new camera app for photos and video, syncing ability between TouchPads and non-WebOS smartphones so users can make calls from the tablet computer, and various performance and user interface improvements.

The update downloads automatically onto the TouchPad, HP's head of WebOS and services, Ari Jaaksi said via his blog.

"We have a big number of TouchPads out there, and we wanted to continue serving users and developers," Jaaksi said.

Jaaksi detailed that despite the TouchPad no longer being in production, HP will still continue to support it with software updates for its many satisfied customers.

In addition to OS updates, HP has over 1,000 TouchPad apps, which can be accessed through its Application Catalog.

"WebOS is a good operating system. I've done my own polls lately, too. I can see many TouchPads in Starbucks, Peets, and other such places. I often go and ask a user what they think about it. I'm getting very positive feedback!"

"Last week I had my car in a repair shop for maintenance. I was in the waiting room working on my TouchPad when a mechanic came to me to deliver the keys. 'Hey, I've got a TouchPad, too. I love it!'."

The TouchPad was discontinued in August after yielding disappointing sales.

A number of retailers then dropped the original $499 price of the TouchPad to just $99.

The TouchPad went into high demand at the liquidated price, with many stores selling out many times.

A number of TouchPad owners have since expressed on various websites such as Amazon that they are extremely pleased with their tablets and even prefer it to Apple’s iPad.
