An Italian man has filed for divorce from his wife of 77 years after discovering she had an affair over 60 years ago.
99-year-old “Antonio C.,” as he is referred to in court documentation, filed for divorce from his 96-year-old wife, “Rosa. C.,” after finding out that she cheated on him long ago. Antonio was rifling through old papers and drawers several days before Christmas when he found letters from his wife to an unknown lover.
The ANSA news agency reported Thursday that the Rome man immediately confronted his wife, who confessed to the tryst. Although the affair happened so long ago- it was 10 years into the longstanding marriage- Antonio was upset enough to file for divorce.
Rosa could not convince him to do otherwise, and has not contested his decision in court.
Antonio made his living as a Cabanieri: a kind of military police that functioned as part of the armed forces. During World War II, the Cabanieri officers fought both for and against fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, eventually helping to overthrow him.
It is unknown if Antonio’s service in the armed forces contributed to his wife’s 1940s affair, but the nearly eight decades spent together will not stand the test of time.
The Italian couple is preparing to go their separate ways, giving them the world record for the oldest people to divorce in history, according to The Telegraph.
This will not be the first time the two have had marital problems. About 10 years ago, Antonio moved out of the house and in with his son. A few weeks later, apparently the dispute had been settled, as he moved back into his home with Rosa.
Antonio and Rosa will beat out the previous record of Bertie and Jessie Wood from the U.K., who were divorced at 98 years old.
The Rome pair has five children, 12 grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
